Mine is the terrific work of the wonderful Mary Zophres in "LA LA LAND". For me great costume design is not just about the most intricate and complicated pieces of clothing, but also about the overall artistic vision the designer has and the contribution that vision brings to the film. And it's also about how the costumes reflect the nature of the characters wearing them. "La La Land" is a fantastic example of all those things for me. The movie is set in modern day LA, but the visual approach is meant to present it in a dream-like fairy tale kind of way, while also paying tribute to the great musicals of the past without flat-out copying them. Adopting the costume traditions of both the MGM and the Jacques Demy musicals, Zophres dives into strong primary colors which make scenes with crowds of people look like firework explosions. That creates a fantastic feeling of a fairy tale Technicolor world in modern times and beautifully pays homage to those older examples of the genre, while also effectively contributing to the overall stylistic nature of the film. And the wardrobe also adds a certain layer of personality to our main characters as well. As Mia matures throughout the movie, the clothes reflect that process rather wonderfully. As for Seb, he is all about longing for the past in the modern world, and I think his costumes represent that longing in a great way too. They're more reserved, more classical. I particularly like the use of the color brown with him, which I personally do associate with something of the past (even his car reflects that!). Anyway, this is why I love the costumes in the movie so much. I love other 2016 achievements as well, but this for me is the best. What about you?

My Costume Design nominations montage is imminent (I'm just waiting on a certain Paramount release to get some HD footage online!), but I gotta say that I love your choice. I get the hype over these outfits more than I do that stupid green dress from Atonement, at least.

I wish you weren't so strict with your reveals because I'd love to read about your pick! And I hope that other folks will say a couple of words about their choices too.

I am so unbelievably irritated at Paramount's handling of the film, and not just in its awards campaign. There is little to no promotional material on it, and any that does exist just recuts the original trailer footage. No extended shots or anything.

It's just the one nominee I need to complete the costume design nomination montage. And yeah, none of those clips work.

I almost resent the people who say there's nothing more to the clothes in La La Land other than the fact that they're colourful, as if the colours alone add nothing to the film or are worthy or praise. That Someone in the Crowd pic you posted perfectly captures why I love the costumes, not only for how their worn but how they're used, the way Mia sashays down the road is reminiscent of West Side Story and is just iconic . My costume design winner would have to be The Handmaiden:

I'm not sure yet. On the one hand... But on the other hand... I think I'm leaning towards La La for this one. I just think the costumes create such an original personality, and they contrast with the colorful cinematography beautifully.

The Handmaiden wins this easily, just like it does virtually any other technical category. HM to Jackie though.

I find there is nothing at all awards worthy about La La Land's costume design at all. It's totally boring, it looks like cheap, supermarket style garments and certainly doesn't enhance anything in the film.
My win is Jackie. I think the way they recreate some of the most iconic costumes of contemporary history is fascinating, and the remainder of the clothing is just so on point. I'll be disappointed if La La Land wins this over this film (hell, even Allied and Florence Foster Jenkins deserve the award far more).

The Handmaiden, though it's close between that, Love & Friendship and The Neon Demon.
