A Fargo season starring Jon Hamm and Jennifer Jason Leigh feels specifically tailored for me so I cannot wait.

100% on RT from 20 reviews and several reviewers are calling it a return to form. Sounds like they're going out on a high and right in time for the Globes

I wasn't aware there had been any word about this being the final season?? Mandela effect? Could've sworn I saw something in 2021 or 2022 that Hawley was hanging it up after one more season. Hmmm I'm not complaining

Have to say so far this season has been a big rebound from Season 4. Seasons 1 and 2 are still the best but this season could end up being right behind those when it’s done.
I’M A WINNER!!

Lol, after hating season 3, i must have blocked out all memory of a season 4 coming out so i was suprised we were already on s5. Now from looking at this board and reviews, seems like it was a good choice to miss out on s4. Maybe i'll re-start and skip ahead to s5 - Jon Hamm is everywhere these days

So far, enjoying season 5. I don’t know if we will ever meet the height of s1-2, but s5 feels a little like it’s returning to form?
I’m not sure how I feel about Temple. I love this character and it’s great to see her pick up meatier work, but there’s something about her exchange with JJL in episode 2 that fell flat, rather than an effortless and believable switch btwn the innocent, suburban housewife act and whatever real is lurking beneath the surface.

Eight episodes in and Season 5 is a massive improvement from Seasons 3 and 4. It's not quite on the level of the first two seasons (though what could be, Season 2 is an all-timer of TV and Season 1 is still impeccably crafted), but it's not had too many false notes and I've enjoyed it and actually anticipated it week to week, which is more than I could say for the previous two seasons. Sam Spruell gives such a great performance with a character that shouldn't really work, and while he's drawing on the likes of Javier Bardem and Peter Stormare's villainous turns in Coen Brothers films, there's still something unique about him here. Jennifer Jason Leigh is terrific, dominating every scene she's in. Dave Foley gets to showcase a new side of himself by playing a character with some menace. Jon Hamm exudes monstrous dickishness that escalates with every scene he's in, and I can't think of a character more deserving of just desserts than his Roy Tillman. And Juno Temple is pretty damn good here as well with a character that probably shouldn't work as well as it does, but I love the concept of the kidnapped woman actually being the biggest badass in the whole show.

I find that the issue with the latest seasons is that the seasons start off strong but fall apart around the mid-point and don't stick the landing in a satisfying way like s1-2.
The first 4-5 episodes of Season 5 were great, i was amped every week, loved watching Juno Temple's character come up with crafty escapes. But the stakes got way too high when Jon Hamm's character seemed to exist in his own completely different world around episode 7/8 with a nonsensical worldview - it just didn't jive with how he was initially introduced, much less with why anyone else around him was going along with it. And the ultimate military/FBI standoff against the militia was a bit disappointing, when it feels like Temple was miles ahead of them anyways.

4 eps in and enjoying it, but Leigh's exaggerated Mid-Atlantic accent is totally throwing me. It's distracting every time she's onscreen. And the kidnapping scheme feels a bit too thin for the A-plot since Tillman has spent three episodes mostly faffing around in his county trying to be the sexy version of Joe Arpaio and not doing much. I'm looking forward to see where his story goes re: the FBI and Dot's backstory because tThat story needs to get bigger.
Loving Temple and Rysdahl and LOVING those iconic Fargo accents. Oh ya you betcha. Wayne is so wholesome, I'd fight for him too.

What are other instances in other shows where the first two episodes of a season was fire but the last two were complete trash? The finale in particular was pretty pathetic. Like forksforest mentioned, the standoff was aggressively lackluster and the final scene between Hamm and Morris felt unnecessary. Really dug the Temple/JJL/Hamm performances, just wish they had an entirely better story-plot-whatever to cook with.

I think this season started incredibly strong - the first four episodes are one of the strongest consecutive four of the show's entire run... and it totally lost me. I'm not sure how big of a step up from S4 this is, I think they're pretty on par with each other.
As a huge fan of JJL, I too found her accent to be extremely phony and she took me out of the show every time she was on screen. Most of the characters felt one dimensional.

well I feel the opposite as some of the people in this thread. I think the second half with the exception of "Linda" (which was an ingenious attempt at necessary exposition but still clunky in execution) was even better than the solid first half, and the best two episodes were 9 and 10. I liked this season a lot. If Hawley does indeed hang up his Fargo hat after S5, it would be a damn strong note to end on.
I'll agree the militia standoff was a bit disappointing. I didn't need it to revert to full-on action flick but the way it was shown (and the way its political ramifications weren't shown) made the violence feel like an afterthought. I almost wish they had been able to resolve that differently so they could sidestep half-assing a shootout. I actually thought Roy would cave somehow (a follow-through from Dot saying he's "weak") and it'd end with all the neckbeards going home with their tails between their legs.
that final scene at the dinner table though... goddamn. Spruell better get an Emmy nom. I kept waiting for that character to make sense and be more than an enjoyable oddity at the periphery of the story, but that scene with Ole Munch links everything together perfectly and was so deliciously satisfying. I want me some of those biscuits! But the whole cast was great, headlined by a steely Juno Temple who sustains Dot's contradictory homemaker sweetness and vulnerability with fiery resolve, and a husky Jon Hamm as a one-man tornado of weaponized macho fundamentalism who towers over and steamrolls anything in his way, supported by a stellar ensemble. Leigh's accent was an acquired taste but it didn't bother me so much in the second half of season.
on a side-note, I loved all the references to OG Fargo in this season. It really felt like a love letter to the Coens classic, from the kidnapping in the first ep (with Spruell stepping into the Stormare role) and Wayne being a car salesman, the gender-swapped tense relationship between Dot and mogul mother-in-law, Indira having a stay-at-home hubby like Marge who's pursuing his own passion (Marge's hubby is better) but I kept spotting them throughout the season, even visual callbacks here and there (like that longshot of Gator kneeling in the snow Buscemi-style after crawling out of the tunnel). Hawley knew what he was doing with this one.
