The correct answer. Along with Gene Hackman. Fitting that they both crushed it in Crimson Tide.

Basically if an actor hasn't given at least a bad performance or two they aren't really that interesting to me - not always the case but it usually implies a sort of routine sameness over a career or a boring stability...........not always, but you know what I mean......never falling on your face isn't a good for actors, or actually for human beings in general

I think you need to watch The Gingerbread Man. It's incredibly rare for him, but Duvall proved he can be very bad indeed.

Yes, you have some actors who operate at a mid-level who just play it safe and never actively suck, but they aren't exactly considered greats, because they don't take enough chances to reach those heights. But when you have the likes of Washington and Hackman, who operate at the very highest level, who consistently take risks and give high-wire act performances....you just have to hold your hands up and say "too good, no mas", these guys are geniuses, and their seeming infallibility is a facet of their genius. These guys probably have performances of their own they dislike or consider failures, but it's probably more perceptible to them than us.

When they're on the ship alone talking and arguing to each other, it's great. I saw Crimson Tide on TV last summer again. A great thriller / action film.

The first actor to come to mind was James Gandolfini. He's had bad roles and bad projects, sure, but I can't think of a bad performance.

Not to put too fine a point of it, but isn't Gandolfini exempt from this discussion? The OP stated "living actors", and Gandolfini is dead. Edit: wallsofjericho mentioned Pete Posthelthwaite, who is also dead, so you aren't alone

But then if I had to think of only living actors, I don't have one that really comes to mind. Hackman comes the closest but The Poseidon Adventure exists.

I can't think of a single actor/actress who hasn't given at least one performance which I hated.
Even some of my all-time favorites have at least one or two performances I'd like to sweep under the rug.

Edward Norton (I liked him in Italian Job and even in some of his questionable films #Collateral, I've never considered him to have given a 'bad' performance)

LaraQ speeders Just to be clear, I actually can't stand Redmayne. He's by far the weakest Actor winner of the decade, and I consider The Danish Girl to be one of the worst performances of the last few years, Oscar-nominated or not. I never bothered with Jupiter Ascending.

I never bothered with Jupiter Ascending. Bless you. I will say, though, I am thankful we live in a world where he won for The Theory of Everything (shitty as it is) over The Danish Girl. If he'd won for the latter, he would crash like a meteor to the bottom of my Best Actor ranking list. I hate The Theory of Everything and I think that Anthony McCarten is the worst screenwriter working, but Redmayne did what he could with what he was given and he was physically very convincing in the part. It's just that there was nothing there for him to really do other than wither in a chair. He was a living prop. The Danish Girl, by contrast, is transphobic horseshit.

Gary Oldman and Eddie Redmayne both won Oscars for a role written by this "screenwriter". The world is a fucking mess man
