I.e. Actresses who are generally considered the greatest living actress of their country. Here are my guesses: Australia: Judy Davis China: Gong Li France: Isabelle Huppert Italy: Sophia Loren UK: Judi Dench/Helen Mirren/Maggie Smith (???) In the English-speaking world (maybe the entire world?), Streep is probably widely considered the greatest regardless of nationality, but it's fun to speculate! Please (civilly) share your thoughts. Add more countries, too - these are just off the top of my head.

France: Isabelle HuppertSorry but when it comes to awards wins , it's definitely Isabelle Adjani (5 CESARS Wins) I also feel that Adjani has always been more revered in general. Huppert is the most nominated actress, though . No doubt about that . SPAIN : CARMEN MAURA

Pfffft Streep is the American Huppert! I would think Mirren it is for the UK now the way we think of it but in some ways I'd say Vanessa Redgrave in terms of being the "best" actress from the UK. Liv Ullman, Norway (does that count?!?)

Meryl Streep is the Meryl Streep of all countries.
Believe it or not some tribes in Mongolia actually consider her to be an all powerful deity.

Funny, I was talking to someone from France recently and they basically said "Americans love Huppert for some reason, she's alright. But she's no Catherine Deneuve!" Hahaha

Hahaha Deneuve is a great actress for sure but she's not better than both Adjani + Huppert . Besides , a lot of people find her to be too icy and bourgeois to be relatable. Ditto for Huppert in a way .

Portugal: Rita Blanco. Or perhaps Beatriz Batarda? I don't know, both always get the best film roles and are nominated for the most prestigious Portuguese awards for almost every film they're in. And of course, both are extremely talented. Rita might be more versatile, though; she can be great in both comedy and drama. Beatriz is stunning in dramas, but I have yet to see her playing a significant role in a comedy; they don't usually pick her for those, I wonder why.
Of course, there's always Eunice Muñoz. That one works more on stage, though (unlike Streep); she played the lead role in adaptations of Driving Miss Daisy, On Golden Pond, Doubt, Mother Courage and Her Children, Summer 'n Smoke, etc., and she's highly respected within the industry. Speaking in general (without separating cinema and stage), I think Muñoz might be our Meryl Streep.
Btw, I second all your choices for the countries you mention. For the UK, I'd go with Judi Dench out of those three.

Norma Aleandro in Argentina (though Graciela Borges is way better); Fernanda Montenegro in Brazil.

Greece: Melinna Mercuori Italy: Anna Magnani, Loren is not that great in acting compared to Magnani Germany: Marlene Dietrich Hongkong: Michelle Yeoh Israel: Gal Gadot North Pole: Ms_Movie_Star Even if I agree with better acting skills for Magnani, I'm sorry to be the one telling you she isn't a living actress. Same with Dietrich and Melina Mercouri.

I don't know if you mean awards wise, celebrity wise, or acting skills. Among the old generation, we might say that in Italy Loren, Lollobrigida and Vitti are probably the best known.
If we talk new generation, I'd say Alba Rohrwacher.

Fernanda Montenegro in Brazil. Maybe Cate Blanchett is the australian Streep? Also, I just looked up who would be the canadian equivalent to Meryl, and I think the closest thing they have there is Rachel McAdams, Ellen Page and Anna Paquin. I thought more high-profile actresses were from there.

India- No one comes to my mind. Perhaps Sridevi can be considered as Meryl Streep of India but she didn't get many performance oriented roles and unfortunately that applies to most Indian actresses.
Savitri (south indian) is the only one i can think. She is better Streep, IMO.

Sri devi has just passed away by the way. Rekha? No. Hema Malini? May be. I think Vidya Balan is the best. Tabu, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai are good too.

Can't find the greatest living actresses from those countries on par with streep, Today's actresses just suckOh honey, that's so unfair! We also do other things... of course, we're not all Jennifer Lawrence.

I thought more high-profile actresses were from there. Yeah, I was trying to pick one for Canada as well. I think Geneviève Bujold could be up there, but she's not very prolific anymore and is still rather underrated. I guess it's Pamela Anderson then.

Canada doesn't have anyone to rate at that level. It's a country that's produced a number of very capable and professional actresses and stars, but not anyone who has really reached or strived for that level of greatness. Right now, you could make a semi-credible case for Carrie Anne Moss being Canada's greatest living actress, which is sort of ridiculous to me. Carrie Anne Moss is a fantastic, somewhat underrated actress, but in the context of the UK or America, she's only a gifted journeywoman actress.
If anyone could potentially reach that type of level, I'd say it's Tatiana Maslany. Her work in Orphan Black shows talent at the highest level, but she needs to sustain a career doing high level work like that.

Streep is a pretty but not beautiful actress, that takes every rol she wants, and hadn't a powerful husband producer/actor/director. And a relative low profile life. So clearly she cannot be Adjani, Loren, Gong Li who are oustanding beauties and hi profile public life, and not Maura or Montenegro who never being pretty at all.- Huppert has more sense even, is like Streep without luck at the Cesars. Streep is more Giovanna Mezzogiorno in Italy, and her only trully rival right now is Helen Mirren.-

In fact she is mixed 4 many critics is consider the worst actress in the world, while 4 other is one of the best. Should be more fare compare Adjani with Penelope Cruz or even Nicole Kidman. Streep is on another league, more in common with Nessa Redgrave, Helen Mirren, Huppert, Glenn Close, Spaceak, Lange, Keaton, Sygulla, Sarandon etc.- Not stunning beauties, not uglys, or started too old.-

Gong Li is Singaporean now and has been for a decade, though.
And for HK it should be Maggie Cheung. She's won 5 Golden Horses (equilavent of the Oscars in the Sinophone though it's actually a pretty shit award). For Taiwan probably Sylvia Chang, she's had the most acting nominations, though she directs a lot nowadays.
