Also apparently you haven't seen many bad films from 2015. I need to correct myself: Creed is not in my bottom 10. And although I try to stay away from movies I won't like, I've seen my share of stinkers. Like, you know, everything you mentioned.

Leviathan is eligible for 2015, right? It actually is, surprisingly. It's weird that it was released in a bunch of other countries, including the US, in 2014 but didn't come out in Russia until 2015.

Maybe I'm blind but I don't see anything abnormal on the release info on imdb. Released in 1969 but didn't get an American theatrical release until 2006, making it technically eligible for the Oscars that year. I personally go by original release date regardless of home country because if a paying audience can see it anywhere in the world, it qualifies for me as a contender for best film of the year. I will say, though, that sticking with home country's original release is so, so, so much better than going by American release date, because a.) a lot of foreign films don't get American release dates, b.) you avoid stupid shit like Army of Shadows's 37-year discrepancy, and c.) why should we give a shit about abiding by the capricious whims of Academy eligibility, when they're the doofuses who put Casablanca in 1943 instead of 1942 just because L.A. didn't get it until January.

Oh, duh. Don't know why I didn't think to look at the US release date... I kinda forgot that it's a popular date to go by. And yeah, I agree with your method.

It actually appeared on a bunch of critics' Top 10 of 2006 lists, bizarrely. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_of_Shadows#Critical_reception
