Here's the post-apocalyptic cult classic Night of the Comet, presented in two separate videos in case one gets taken down! My thanks to Cheesecake for recommending this gem in her 31 Days of Horror series last year.

Thanks ... I've been meaning to watch this for awhile, hopefully this motivates me to finally do so. I just sat down and watched the whole thing without meaning to. I'm wondering now why I never gave this 5 stars when it is possibly the most contagiously joyous movie I've ever seen. Note: There is a small video glitch right at the end of the movie, when there's a fade from evening to night there's a big red VIDEO ERROR message that shows up for about a quarter of a second. So don't be alarmed if that happens, it's just some mistake made transferring the film to the stream.

Night of the Comet is on Prime right now for those who want to watch better quality than the youtube version.

Here are two great films by Bahram Bayzai which I watched recently and they are somewhat different to what usually comes out of Iran, as they lean more to the realm of Magical Realism and feature heavily theatrical acting. They are definitely worth a watch:

Thank you for bumping, themoviesinner - last month I tried like crazy to find this thread but didn't know what to search. So here it is! I wanted and will now post The Runner, which popped up on Youtube with English subs last month, not the greatest quality but not that bad either. Impossible to find otherwise.... unless you'd like to spend $140 on a VHS ! I'll repost what I wrote for the Underrated Movie of 1984 thread: The Runner is maybe Iran’s greatest film (rivaled by Close Up and A Separation). It’s better than its influence 400 Blows, imo. [also better than another child-in-Iran movie the great Where Is The Friend's Home]. Simply about an obsessively-running homeless kid in post-revolution Iran. There’s a marked realism in its depiction of vagabond youths and socioeconomic struggle. An amorphous yet apt linearity (one could draw a line from Italian neorealism to this and then Dardennes). But there’s also some stylized scenes of powerfully poetic exalt. Many unforgettable images and use of location. And centering it all is one of the all time “endurance” child performances—heartbreaking, resilient, energetic, kind of life-affirming.

Not especially obscure, but it turns out that Frank Capra's Pocketful of Miracles is on Youtube in 1080p.

Mattsby I watched The Runner yesterday and I found it very good indeed. It was incredibely naturalistic, but also poetic in nature, featuring a lot of symbolic scenes that you don't often encounter in neorealist works. It's definitely among the best Iranian films I've seen and I'm a big fan of the country's cinema.

Here's one of the best romantic dramas of the 21st century. A great and underrated film and a big favourite of mine.

The writer-director Amir Naderi is still active - and co-wrote or advised the last three Ramin Bahrani films (99 Homes, one of them) - I've been hoping for a Criterion treatment, could get interviews with him and put together some great essays and stuff.

rarefilmm.comThis site is great for those looking for rare gems, they have a lot of older and foreign stuff that haven't been readily available or ever properly released. There's a film index or could search anyone's name to see what they have....

Ken Loach's Black Jack, a magical little adventure movie. No subtitles on this video, and the accents are difficult, because Loach. But it's really great stuff, showcasing his compassion that is his signature.

rarefilmm.com led me to the Russian social network service OK.RU (which hosts all the rarefilm uploads), where you can find A LOT of films, including lots of rare and non-English ones. A lot of uploads come with Turkish subs or Russian dubs so you have to do a bit of digging sometimes but there are certain users/channels that stand out immediately as ones to go to. There's one user who's uploaded literally hundreds of international films (most of which I haven't even heard of) all with the professional English subs, and most of them are in good quality. for example, The Aviator's Wife (and most of Rohmer's catalog actually, this is where I've been watching his films). It's an absolute treasure chest.

Patrice Chéreau's Intimacy and Andrzej Zulawski's Cosmos just dropped on Kanopy, and James Ivory's Quartet last week (now I just need them to get The Bostonians and The Europeans).

Shivers (1981)
Used to be on Prime, but I don't think it is anymore. Found a Youtube link with English subs, for anyone interested. A rarely seen, really great, haunting coming-of-age pic set in post-Stalinist Poland. This is as well-made as anything by the Polish masters.

Found this Youtube page like two weeks ago - called 'Flick Vault' with mostly horrors and obscure dramas, and partly bc their vids are in 1080p quality I've been watching a whole bunch - Jack’s Back, The Sorcerers, Witchfinder General, Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things, When Eight Bells Toll, Where Angels Fear to Tread, Lunch Hour, Doomwatch, Miss Julie, etc. They also have Repulsion, Cul-de-sac, The Honeymoon Killers.... Most of the others I haven't heard of..... www.youtube.com/user/ExpozaFilm/videos
