Having read the trashy book, I'm not even remotely surprised. This was never going to be an awards contender and it spares me the infuriating Amy Adams predictions that were never going to pan out.

Amy looks great but that trailer didn't do a thing for me and that music is awful.

It looks so bad with those weird camera movements and awful music. So bad.

I dunno, I'll say Amy Adams looks good (not a huge fan but she's always solid and I always like her) but this trope about a woman who is particularly vulnerable - ie Wait Until Dark or like she is here has grown quite tiresome. You're better of having a fully capable female who is then outmatched (ie The Descent) - that is actually scarier.
Not saying it can't be good and it's a book adaptation but it lends itself to certain problematic cliches - you're gonna learn a lot about her condition, her medications, her actress tics in portraying all that stuff. So already it looks shaky to me from that trailer at least.

Julianne Moore's facepalm at 52 second-mark is the best thing about whatever the fuck that trailer was.

Trailer reminded me of Witness to Murder (1954), but Amy Adams is no Barbara Stanwyck - she looks blah here as usual. Actually looks kinda entertaining - hope Moore / Oldman get some good scenes.

But every bit of news leading up to this has been a disaster, and she doesn’t have any other interesting projects coming up. Plus she’s just turned 45. Good roles start to dry up for actresses in Hollywood around that age regardless of their popularity.

She has six nods and is publicly viewed as a "great actress" and even though she's getting older she still looks great. I expect her to keep being a factor into her 50's like Blanchett and Streep.

There's still the possibility that this performs well at the box-office, and even if it doesn't Adams is too popular for her career to be derailed by one misfire as a lead. She's too well-liked in the industry for that to happen, and she's cultivated enough connections over the years that good roles will keep coming her way. How this one film performs will change zilch.

To be honest the actress with the best career in her 50's right now is Nicole Kidman. She set the example for others to follow by going so heavily into producing, and others seem to be following it. I think Blanchett has had some lean years with since the middle of the decade with a succesion of not especially interesting projects. Competition has gotten so fierce, that no one is guaranteed a Streep like monopoly on the best roles/projects into their 50's. Even Kate Winslet has been struggling in her 40's. Relying on your reputation to keep getting offered the best roles is tantamount to career suicide for an actress in middle age. To an extent I'd agree that Adams period of nabbing some of the prime prestige projects before others may be drawing to a close. But she, like others ( Theron etc) seem to be following Kidman's lead by taking producing seriously, and not as a vanity shingle as it used to be for most stars. Adams did produce Sharp Objects which got enough acclaim and ratings to put her producing career to a good start. Even Blanchett has realised producing her own material is the way to go now looking at her upcoming docket like Mrs America. When you produce your own stuff and it works, it leads to a dominio effect where you become more in-demand for projects you don't produce yourself. At the same time, producing is hard work and not everyone will have the natural aptitude or drive to keep doing it, even if they produce one or two sucessful projects. Or some like Naomi Watts just end up producing terrible projects like Gypsy that do nothing for their careers.

It's been that way since the days of Burt Lancaster (one of the first actors to really become a producer-actors). Many actors find that the best roles tend to come along after some success, when they have final say in the scripts. It doesn't always work, like the example you listed, but as a performer, especially as far as actresses are concerned, it's generally the smartest thing you could do.

I understand your predilection towards hijacking any and all discussions involving Watts's perceived peers to mock them and try to bring them down, but instead of talking about Kidman here we could keep this one about the other actress whose career you wish your fave had.

Meanwhile your muse can’t even find a box office to poison anymore. But yeah this looks like trash.
