Demian Bichir in A Better Life. The nominations came out before I had seen the film so I was pretty flabbergasted when I saw that he got a Best actor nomination. Then I saw the film. He’s so good in the film and I’d love to see him get a lead role in a US film again. He’s got a very powerful monologue in the movie but the performance really works because of how naturalistic it is. I never felt like he was trying too hard or veering into melodrama.

Absolutely agreed. Jean Dujardin is my win that year, but Bichir would've made a sublime winner as well (and I slightly prefer him over Oldman's career-best turn that year). It's a beautifully inspired nomination.

Joanne Woodward’s vulnerable and devastatingly quiet turn in Rachel, Rachel deserves more love. She is such a strong actress that can convey so much with just a look, and it’s put on great display here. Audrey Hepburn is also unforgettable in The Nun’s Story and I feel like it isn’t mentioned much along with her other performances. Also want to give a shout-out to the freakishly strong 1974 lead actress lineup where Diahann Carroll rarely gets any attention but is oh so good in Claudine.
Candice Bergen in Starting Over is the epitome of a scene-stealer. Comedic performances often get lost in the shuffle/crapped on, but she’s a complete delight in this.
I really like Jack Gilford in Save the Tiger and he left a big impression with such a small part.
George C. Scott has a legendary “win” (heh) and some memorable performances to his name, but I don’t think he’s ever received enough credit for The Hospital. Maximilian Schell in The Man in the Glass Booth seems super underseen as well. Going further back, Cary Grant was only nominated twice and his first nod was for Penny Serenade — a touching and sweet little film that is anchored by a heartfelt performance from Grant and the criminally snubbed Irene Dunne. They have amazing chemistry and he brings just the right level of charm and empathy to the role — super underrated here.

Laura Linney, The Savages. That nomination came out of nowhere and I absolutely adored it. PSH and Linney had incredible chemistry as siblings. It's a pity that no one seems to have seen it.

Agree on Hanks in SPR, Olivier in The Entertainer, and Hopkins in Nixon.
I love Amy Adams in Doubt more than pretty much anyone else.

Agreed about George C. Scott not getting enough credit for his brillant performance in The Hospital. I probably love Lynn Carlin in Faces more than just everybody, one of the most mesmerizing female performances of the 60's.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Crazy Heart. We've talked about this one before and still baffles me that people didn't appreciate this performance.
Nick Nolte, Warrior. This movie has a few problems, but this guy ain't one of em. His performance as the alcoholic father is amazing and when he gets rejected by his son. Oh man he was devastating to watch.

Maria Tomei for In the Bedroom springs to mind. Obviously her perfect win gets plenty of chat, and her turn in The Wrestler gets some talk too, but she is just as good here as in The Wrestler and it is practically never mentioned. In fact, that reminds me of Tom Wilkinson, and both his nominations, which I think fall into this category too. He's the best in show in In the Bedroom, but I feel like Spacek gets all the talk for that film, and I preferred Tomei (obviously) and Stahl over her too. He also steals the show in Michael Clayton...I'm sorry but Tilda Who?
Edit: and Kate Winslet in Little Children

I find Hugh Jackman in Les Miserables pretty underrated. Hathaway is the best thing about it, but Jackman is the enduring heart and soul of the thing.

Janet McTeer for Albert Nobbs. If her film wasn’t so bleh people would still be talking about her performance.

John Hawkes in Winter's Bone. One of my all time favorite supporting actor performances. It's funny seeing this here bc I can remember the IMDb boards at the time losing their mind over this perf - and he got a lot of love from critics and awards. So I might've called it, if anything, overrated then.... but on a recent rewatch I was in awe of his perf.... he gets all these legendary moments (the rearview mirror scene is unshakeable, it burns into your memory) and he's a tattered nightmare of a guy, yet he makes him feel like a human, almost regular if that's the word - he doesn't play any of it overt, not like someone else might've bc on the page the character is hard, no fear, no shame - he gives it life.
