Ok so Downsizing not showing up despite their love for Payne makes me think it probably wasn't "fixed" in post and is still a mess. The movie was horrible and the fact that it seemed to be positioned as a major Oscar player was mind boggling.

The movie was horrible and the fact that it seemed to be positioned as a major Oscar player was mind boggling. I've seen a few people theorize that Paramount spent so much money on it and needed an Oscar player that they hoped that by spending even more money on it, they could convince enough people that it wasn't that bad and that it could still sneak into some major categories. Knowing how Hollywood works, I could actually believe this theory. Unfortunately also knowing Hollywood, I could believe that this strategy has worked with other films in the past.

Downsizing is still doing the 3 earlier fall fests... it could even be added later here. I personally wouldn't rule it out.
On the other hand, Lady Bird is looking stronger now. Telluride + TIFF + NYFF is the best trifecta for Oscar contenders in recent years.

Telluride + TIFF + NYFF is the best trifecta for Oscar contenders in recent years. I'm certainly a lot more optimistic in Saoirse Ronan now, but I don't know if it goes beyond acting noms for Ronan and Metcalf and screenplay. Although in an expanded lineup, maybe it could since only Dunkirk, The Papers, and Call Me By Your Name all seem highly likely right now. I'm really looking forward to seeing how strong Bening and Ronan turn out because the Best Actress lineup seems like it could consist of only former winners (Dench, Lawrence, McDormand, Streep, Winslet), but that doesn't seem likely since there's almost always a newbie and having five former winners didn't even happen in 2013 when there wasn't a newbie. I guess Sally Hawkins could be in the mix as well, but even though Fox Searchlight has a lot of confidence in The Shape of Water, it feels like there's a lot of genre films and/or technical achievements in the mix, and I'm not confident in del Toro right now. I hope that The Shape of Water reaches the heights of Pan's Labyrinth, but I don't expect that to happen since it seems such a long time since Pan's Labyrinth. Plus, she's not a Matt Damon or Sandra Bullock, so I think that might hurt her chances at a leading nomination. Plus, Oscar darling, or maybe former Oscar darling, Amy Adams couldn't even get in over newbie Ruth Negga despite her A-List status, and Arrival being nominated for 8 Academy Awards and the film grossing over 100 million in the US. I also feel that Hawkins' nomination for Blue Jasmine could possibly work against her. She is definitely on their radar; although, I think she was already on their radar after Happy-Go-Lucky, but maybe there's not an urgency for her to be nominated because she already had her "welcome to the club" nomination, and I'm not sure that she's thought of by most voters as someone who needs makeup nominations for them missing her before. Of course, she does have Maudie, and she could definitely get a lot of raves for The Shape of Water too even if the film doesn't. mother! may be too weird or not an Oscar player, and I've read that Victoria and Abdul is underwhelming and seems unlikely even for Dench. (Although I'll believe it when I see it because I read that about Philomena and about Florence Foster Jenkins last year, and even though Dench isn't quite at Streep's level with AMPAS, they obviously love her a lot.)

Yes, it does. Here's the synopsis of the film too from The Playlist, I thought Winslet's character was on the run from gangsters from what I read about it earlier, but it makes sense from the stills and other information coming out that Temple's character is actually the one on the run. I sense that Allen is going to give Winslet even more to work with than I thought knowing that her character was a former actress, and I already figured that she'd probably have enough for another leading win.

Magic in the Moonlight was bad, Cafe Society was utterly bland as hell, and Irrational Man was absolutely atrocious... can't say I'm holding my breath for this.

Very nice poster. I hope this film's good - if it's in the Blue Jasmine ballpark (the only Allen film I like), I'll be happy.

I like it, looks quite nostalgic, does anyone knows if this is similar to Radio Days, plot and clips suggest that.

Very happy about this Jim Belushi comeback! It's been far too long.

Very happy about this Jim Belushi comeback! It's been far too long. This and his awesome performance in Twin Peaks this year should certainly pave the way for a comeback. I didn't even know he was in WW but that's good news.

Hmm, could be good. I'm really not an Allen fan, but this looks like it could maybe be on the level of Blue Jasmine, which is the only film of his I properly like. Winslet looks very good, though I'm not sure if this will be a Blanchett-level performance leading to an awards sweep. We'll have to see.
I'm happy Juno Temple looks like she has a good role. Also, Paulie and Bobby!

The cinematography and production design look lovely (but Vittorio is a god, so that's to be expected, and Allen's period pieces are strikingly evocative and lived-in), but Belushi and Temple look like the standouts as opposed to Winslet, at least judging by this trailer.

The cinematography looks beautiful but I don't think the acting or writing looks anything to write home about at all. Maybe it's a riveting viewing experience but I'm not getting too much confidence from this. I'm starting to wonder if Winslet can even make it into best actress this year...
