Whoops. One more part to go. Waaaait a sec! Sorry, I thought I selected the "play both parts as a feature" bit on my DVD.

Oh, okay, now I'm done. Opinion is exactly the same. I laughed a little harder this time.

Not sure whether to try to explain the first 16 parts to Martin before he watches the last 2, or just wait and mentally prepare myself to read his thoughts when he's finished

Very late to the party, but finally got around to watching The Return this past week, and was kind of bowled over by it... and this is coming from someone who liked but didn’t love the first two seasons and disliked FWWM. Definitely want to revisit them now... though it probably would have been a good idea to rewatch them beforehand because I ended up having to research stuff I had forgotten in between some episodes.
I don't always love Lynch because at times I find him undisciplined, but watching this reminded me of why I do still greatly admire him as an artist, because even when I'm struggling to make sense of certain elements or when I'm puzzled by certain choices, there's always just enough logic to the whole thing to keep me watching, and the pieces that I can't completely "make fit," while maddening, don't detract from the experience so much as they lend an air of mystery to the overall work, making it this elusive thing that you can't quite pin down, and ultimately making it more compelling. It's kind of a remarkable balancing act of toeing the line of incoherence without pushing me away as a viewer. Having said that, I don't think it's perfect and I didn't love everything about it, but there's enough greatness in it that will keep me chewing on it for a while. I do think it's somewhat overstuffed, and structurally I found it a little too diffuse and fragmented to the point where certain episodes just felt like a series of cameos from characters.
On an aesthetic level, it's pretty brilliant, from the visuals to the sound design. I know some ppl were disappointed with the lack of music throughout, but I kind of loved that decision, which added to the uncanny tone of this season. In the original series, I always felt like Laura Palmer's theme was a bit overused, but here I thought it was utilized perfectly in its couple appearances.
If this is the last we see of Twin Peaks, I think it would be the right move to stop it here. The shattering ending of that final episode is one I don't really want to see undone.

Just finished a rewatch of Twin Peaks: The Complete Mystery (my first in three years) and wow Bob wow, not only is this still by far my favorite show, but The Return is even better with time passing. I am utterly stunned. I had to sit still for about five minutes in silence after the final scene of the final episode. Totally shaken. Anyway, I kept a journal and rated every single episode out of 10, so I figured MAR was as good a place as any to post my obsessive cataloging. I binged the whole thing in about two weeks and it was stunning to see how it evolves (mutates?) from something a bit more firmly within the reins of brilliant writer/showrunner Mark Frost (seasons 1-2) into a far more dangerous, experimental Lynchian beast ( Fire Walk with Me and The Return), even whilst both halves exhibit each creator's fingerprints beautifully in their own way. Twin Peaks: Season One 8.75"Pilot" 10"Traces to Nowhere" 9"Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer" 10"Rest in Pain" 9"The One-Armed Man" 8"Cooper's Dreams" 9"Realization Time" 8"The Last Evening" 7Twin Peaks: Season Two (A) 8.89"May the Giant Be With You" 10"Coma" 9"The Man Behind Glass" 8"Laura's Secret Diary" 7"The Orchid's Curse" 8"Demons" 9"Lonely Souls" 10"Drive with a Dead Girl" 9"Arbitrary Law" 10Twin Peaks: Season Two (B) 7.46"Dispute Between Brothers" 9"Masked Ball" 8"The Black Widow" 7"Checkmate" 8"Double Play" 6"Slaves and Masters" 5"The Condemned Woman" 7"Wounds and Scars" 7"On the Wings of Love" 8"Variations on Relations" 7"The Path to the Black Lodge" 7"Miss Twin Peaks" 8"Beyond Life and Death" 10Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me 10 Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces 8.5Twin Peaks: The Return 9.39"My Log Has a Message for You" 9"The Stars Turn and a Time Presents Itself" 9"Call for Help" 9"...Brings Back Some Memories" 9"Case Files" 9"Don't Die" 9"There's a Body All Right" 9"Gotta Light?" 10"This is the Chair" 9"Laura is the One" 9"There's Fire Where You Are Going" 10"Let's Rock" 9"What Story is That, Charlie?" 9"We Are Like the Dreamer" 10"There's Some Fear in Letting Go" 10"No Knock, No Doorbell" 10"The Past Dictates the Future" 10"What is Your Name?" 10

The Return part 8 God DAMN it, David. What did I just say? WHAT DID I TELL YOU? Part 8 is probably one of the Top 5 most extraordinary & greatest hours in television history... period. Maybe the greatest Twin Peaks episode ever, and that's saying a lot considering the O.G. pilot AND finale were both masterpieces, and The Return has at the very least 6 or 7 episodes I'd also rate in the A+ category. Shameful...you shame yourself.

As I rewatch it, I think you could make a pretty credible argument that TV as a medium has never topped that final sequence of 2x07 ... RIP Julee
