The Stooges - Fun House (1970) - ~9/10
For its first 6 songs you could (and many do) argue this as the greatest Rock album ever made - no pretense to Art at all - primal, terrifying, sexual, scuzzy in a way that defies easy categorization or rationalization. The 7th track is 5 minutes of noise and I never play it........ but that isn't really the point and is sort of like telling the cops that the guy that just punched you in the face didn't even say hello.

Various Artists - Little Steven Presents - The Coolest Songs In The World - Volume 1 (2006).........7.5+/10
What Power-Pop is in 2020, Garage Rock was a decade or two ago - the pasts way of reclaiming anything in Rock that hasn't been sanitized, co-opted or removed from its gloriously lurid legacy.
These songs - "presented" by Little Steven Van Zandt's radio show is hit or miss but these compilation volumes speak to a lot of the best "hidden" Rock and Roll of its era - that um, sounded like a previous era - and there are at least 7 or 8 volumes of it too.

Peter Perrett - How The West Was Won (2017) - 8.5-9/10
What could have been a trainwreck on paper turns out to be an "Oh My God!" classic of survival (over drugs and himself) and a testament to love and family without whom he couldn't have made this record.
At its best moments it rivals (and evokes) the work of his legendary band - The Only Ones and his fascinating "solo" debut too (1996's underrated af Woke Up Sticky) which is amazing enough ...........but this one was far more improbable.

The Clean - Compilation (1986)......~9/10
One thing you always want to avoid is people who like "perfect" - or "near perfect" - things...."perfect" things get ruined and are kind of boring......but the near perfect compilation that's pretty tough to make. Take the case of The Clean - New Zealand's finest - who have all the songs released on Compilation in an expanded format that most people know - Anthology.
But here's the thing, Anthology isn't as good even though it has all the same songs here - odd but true.......and it doesn't capture a specific era in itself (1981-82) and these songs when placed side by side are greater than their original EPs (which could seem slight) or better than what came after (which just seemed like more, wonderful but.....).
I don't think you can still find Compilation (maybe ?),......but if you can it is like The Who - Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy .......a near perfect compilation.

REM - Reckoning (1984) - 10/10
How great were REM in 1984?
Well this was their 3rd "10" in a row (in 3 years) and not many bands make more than 1 at most........ they hadn't released anywhere near a bad song yet .............and if they broke up after this they'd still have already - almost alone - influenced a ton of bands and caused an irrevocable seismic shift in Rock music.

Alex Chilton - Live At The Ocean Club (1977) - 8+/10
To people who love Alex Chilton (basically that's people with ears) there is a heroic and unique contradiction in him - he's the only guy who when he died was more celebrated for his "failure" (Big Star's lack of commercial hits) than his "success" (as a teen in The Box Tops).
But here in 1977 there was no guarantee at all that he'd be a huge cult phenomenon one day but also no guarantee that these songs (or new ones) couldn't maybe become hits either.
In a part professional, part prickly jerkoff/genius style and playing Big Star songs, a Box Tops song, original solo songs and covers (where he snidely introduces Wouldn't It Be Nice as being "by Charlie Manson" - and you think pacinoyes is "problematic" (my middle finger)......and also trashes Chuck Berry's Memphis, Tennessee (his middle finger, to his hometown).
On two absolute standouts Dominating Force he predates Pavement by 15 years (!) and She Might Look My Way where he sums up himself and delivers a song that could fit on Radio City or Third which of course is a Godlike level......to people who love Alex Chilton that is.
This whole 16 song set is on Youtube and highly recommended to everyone with ears.

The Replacements - Boink!! (1986) - Well it's at least a 9.... isn't it? Cheap-y, short, out of print 8 song (vinyl) UK compilation of the greatest American band ev-uh, snags 3 genuinely great ones from Hootenanny, 3 more lesser but still great-ish ones from Stink - including the hilariously offensive White and Lazy (oh to go with that sexist album title huh, pacinoyes? ) a stupendous B-side and (at the time unreleased) a non-LP classic Nowhere Is My HomeAND a fantastic album cover of the band in an alley looking like they might beat you up or ask you for some spare change. Happy Birthday/New Year Paul

Kurt Baker - Brand New Beat (2012) - ~8.5 / 10 If you know who he is you already know this record and if not, it's a Power Pop entry point record to the genre.
The New Year is already paying off, isn't it?!?

Tristania - Widow's Weeds (1998) -- 10/10First day of the new year and I decided to listen to one of my favorite albums of all time. This is gothic metal at it's finest. A haunting, melancholic offering that is manages to shift through moments of dark gloomy broodiness to reach moments of pure beauty. I think this is the epitome of what "gothic" music represents. An unforgettable musical experience and a true masterpiece.

Kurt Baker "Rockin' For A Living" EP (2011).......8++/10
6 song EP that basically kicked off not just his great 1-2 Elvis Costello-y punch along with his landmark full length album Brand New Beat (2012) but also the whole currently thriving 2019/2020 Power Pop era.
He didn't write a single bad song over this EP and that full album and it was the best Power Pop since The Exploding Hearts a decade earlier (not at that level, but still...)

Stiff Richards - "State of Mind" (2020) ........7.5/10
Yet another of those Australian Iggy-influenced bands that occasionally knock it out of the park in a Radio Birdman sort of way....starts great and ends great.....with some ace points in the middle and like New Zealand gutter punks The Cavemen they get better when you least expect it and are about to give up on them.

The Minutemen (1985) - 3-Way Tie (For Last) - 8/10
Their last and aside from Double Nickels on The Dime their most palatable and coherent release. A mix of covers and some ace originals and like always, it's funny in multiple ways too - about things that aren't funny at all.
Like all their work it appears to be off the cuff and conversational which was their secret weapon and makes them exceedingly hard to imitate....then or now.
