One of the things to consider is that truly spiritual or religious based films, which form some of cinema's greatest works Dreyer, Bresson, etc. is essentially a dead art form - or at least a subject of derision on the surface - Twitter comments here for example, snarky stuff (and no, I don't consider Breaking The Waves a good film especially as a religious film).
Something has changed in the culture to shut it out of our cinematic dialog - sometimes it still exists in ways, but in ways that are often vulgar or too straightly referenced so that the reference itself is the means to an end (mother!). It's not all bad news, of course, Jesus of Montreal I think is a great one - I used to watch it every Easter - The Fourth Man was deceptively brilliant too, and heck, The Witch had a lot to say about faith and spirituality indeed - but in general people bristle at this material now - particularly the more obvious it is, unless their pre-disposed to it, which really defeats the point.

Indeed. It doesn't help that Gibson's such a controversial figure and his religion plays a very heavy role in that controversy. For my part, I find The Passion of the Christ a grueling experience that feels like a perfect complement to Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc (albeit far bloodier; one thing I wish Gibson had done was focus a bit more on the psychological torment Christ endured, although there were indeed flashes of that). I don't know if I would want a sequel to it, but considering Gibson has hinted at depicting hell, I gotta know what Mad Mel thinks the inferno looks like. It should also be said that I think Rosalinda Celentano is one of the best portrayals of Lucifer in cinema; I hope she returns.

The fact that this is happening at all is kinda insane.

If this film does get made, I expect it may result in quite the fuss stirring up. I also feel as though that fuss might border on tiresome at times. I'm already irritated by it and it hasn't even happened yet.

Still happening apparently (?) - I already posted in this thread when I was a young man - 2 and 1/2 years ago (oh shut up !) Now Jim Caviezel has provided more information on the project, telling Breitbart News that the sequel will be "the biggest film in world history." Caviezel revealed that the film will be titled The Passion of the Christ: Resurection and claimed that he's read Mel Gibson's third draft. It's clear that Gibson is taking his time with the project after previously commenting on the scope and scale he hopes to achieve with the sequel. screenrant.com/passion-christ-2-jim-caviezel-biggest-film-history/
