www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/kobe-bryants-oscar-nomination-clouded-by-past-sexual-assault-allegation-1077353Not sure if this belongs here or in the "Scandal" thread. But he did just get nominated... (feel free to move this thread) This case is far worse than Franco's - but his allegations were fresh in everyone's minds. I think Franco wasn't as strong as we thought - a comedic performance in a Seth Rogen film. It's not something they usually go for, but it's hard not to make the connection to the allegations. Still, it's a performance worth rewarding. How much flack will the Academy get for nominating Bryant?

I think what shocks me the most is . . . Academy Award nominee Kobe Bryant?

Kobe's nomination is some sort of consolation after Lebron James got snubbed for Supporting Actor in Trainwreck

this is hilarious........... lol.
He played for over a decade after the incident, and left the game being absolutely worshipped by everyone.
But now that he's nominated for an Oscar, it's a controversy again.

I’m all for this movement, I think it’s great and it’s awesome that women are finally speaking out against the likes of people such as Harvey Weinstein and Danny Masterson that’ve ruined lives. This, along with the allegations against Aziz and Franco to an extent are really starting to grasp for straws and ruining the voices of women that have come out against serious issues.

To be honest, I didn't even know Bryant had anything to do with a short film - and I think the average person that watches the show would have no idea either. And while his past accusations were the first thing I thought of when I heard of his nomination, and I think it deserves to be trudged up again in these times, I'm with Viced on the fact that I'm amazed it's being brought up now because of a short film co-screenplay nomination rather than his ten plus years remaining in basketball and being showered in praises. A little late, I'd say. But better late than never I guess.
Also I called Franco getting snubbed because a) I don't think they wanted the bad press for the next two months leading up to the ceremony, then all the bad press during/afterward and b) I'm sure he was #6 on the list, but maybe the last-minute voters helped bump up Denzel instead since I'm sure he was already close enough to that spot given his Globe/SAG nods.

Yeah, but did you see the ring he gave his wife after he did it?

Same here. I've looked up the short afterwards and thought it was alright. I also agree about the timing to mention his past assault again. That incident seems to get brought into light at the moment in the wake of the Franco snub, how Plummer became Spacey's replacement for the nods, how the attention for Baby Driver became underplayed for award shows, and the #metoo movement. I figured the Academy were just trying to play things safe with what been going on around Hollywood in recent memories. Bryant's incident in 2003 wasn't really out of allegations and faced his charges right away once it became known to the public, but still later return to the team into his retirement.
