I think this is one of those films that needs to be deeply mulled over, if not revisited multiple times. Still not entirely sure how I feel about it. Only fully behind the acting (Krieps is MVP), cinematography, and score after first viewing.
Also, even though it's becoming a bit of shtick at this point, nobody can direct a close-up, rapid-fire confrontation the way PTA does.

I'm dying to see it and I think it's a pivotal film because I do love PTA and I think I like him way less than some do. I don't know any other guy who has quite the same pull on his fans.
I think he's made 1 near-masterpiece, TWBB and everything else I love too except Inherent Vice - not a botch but uneven and Magnolia (like it a lot but too long and redundant to me but still top 10 of 1999).
But this film couldn't have been anticipated prior, based on what I know of it, it is an example of something springing for good or bad from his writer/director mind exclusively. That alone makes it exciting and makes him more or less unique among American filmmakers of his generation - there's no pattern of analysis to him the way there are to others, to say "oh he does this" or "this is like" etc. What people are responding to are the twists and turns of his whole career. It's kind of awesome the respect movie fans - real movie fans, an increasingly dying breed, show him.

I feel less ambiguous about this than I did about Inherent Vice (I do plan to revisit that one at some point). I thought this one was fine, like a 7/10, I just couldn't stand Reynolds. The cinematography and score are superb, though, and I agree Krieps is the best of the cast.

I remember people said similar things about Freddie and Lancaster Dodd. PTA doesn't seem to shy away from basing his narratives on insufferable people, and I'm totally ok with that.

Visually arresting and well-acted, but too precise in its presentation and meticulous in its detailing. There's barely room to breathe in the passionless world Anderson has rigorously constructed. Props for that ending, though - was NOT expecting that.
7/10, or B.

I really hope PTA pulls DDL out of retirement in six years or something. The world would be lesser without his performances.
And that ending was crazy... I loved it.

What was "crazy" about the ending? Is it the fact that Reynolds is cool with Alma basically making him her bitch? I mean, I get that he has mommy issues and basically wants someone to care for him the same way a mother would, but I didn't think it was some kind of unexpected (as Tyler says) or truly surprising turn of events.

Saw it earlier today. I'm currently attempting to whip up a review, but I can say that I haven't seen a movie this damn perfect in a really long time. My expectations for this were through-the-roof, and somehow they were exceeded. I've been impossibly elated for hours now. This is just unbelievably good.

Movie of the year for me I think. PTA is one of the only directors who can take a movie with this premise and come out with that. Surprisingly funny, amazing performances. Such a shame Krieps and Manville probably won't get nominations.
The theater experience was almost ruined by a woman sneezing and sniffling in front of me all night but the movie was so good I didn't mind.

Sorry PTA fans, but this was an excruciating bore. To be fair, I haven't "liked" a PTA film in 20 years. This was just a tough watch. Reynolds is insufferable. DDL deserved better. Krieps is the MVP.

I'm going to see this ASAP. It's really cool how many Oscar nominations it got, I'm happily surprised for PTA.

The only good PTA movies have come out in the last 11 years, the stuff before that is mostly trash. Why do you feel that way. Aside from Punch Drunk Love I find his early 3 movies to feel far too imitative to excite me very much. It sounds condescending but I really just find those early movies to feel like the work of a young man who is trying too hard to be showy and living in thrall to directors like Scorsese and Altman. I can't even endure Magnolia anymore though I used to love it. With TWBB he started to come into his own and his last 3 films he's emerged into a masterful director who has his own unique style and perspective.

Saw it , mostly loved it, botches the ending unnecessarily which should have come a scene or two before anyway. Also a little too cute in how this designer is undressed himself (symbolically natch)...........but .........
DDL is the male performance of the year - no one is close imo. Everyone else is in top form, PTA himself is economical and lacerating in his script and direction.
8.5-9.0/10 - my number 2 of the year.

Just got back from a double-feature of this and The Shape of Water. Now there's a dual billing to make Freud blush.
I definitely need a day or two to mull it over, but trust and believe that I am seeing it again in a few days.
