I've been busy lately. But I was finally able to find some time earlier this morning to sit down, turn on Netflix, & give Mudbound a watch.
Loved the film, but can someone on here do me a favor & ELI5 how Blige has received so much buzz? I hate to use the term "nothing role", but that's kind of exactly what it was. She didn't do much in the film at all, & her part was very very underwritten (much more so than I assumed it would be). Don't get me wrong, she was good. But just not "nomination-worthy" good, by ANY means.

It's incredibly baffling to me that she has made it this far, and I attribute it to the general weakness of the year and the type of role Blige plays, rather than the actual performance itself. It isn't even her lack of screentime that is an issue (Laura Dern's performance in Wild was only nine minutes, and she lingered over the whole of that movie), but rather that there just isn't any meat to her character. She's basically an animate prop.
If anyone from Mudbound deserves any recognition, it's Jason Mitchell.

That's the way I feel about all of the Supporting Actress candidates. Having now seen all the Supporting Actress candidates, here is how I'd rank them: Haddish. Spencer. Hunter. Metcalf. Janney. Chau. KST. Blige.

It's the role that's generating the heat: long-suffering, downtrodden, subservient. Compare her work to Tiffany Haddish's in Girls' Trip: outspoken, liberated, independent. It's a problem that awards bodies seem to favor these roles when honoring female actors - black female actors in particular.

She's fine, but nothing award-worthy. Mulligan was much better IMO.

She was okay, but really not award worthy. Mulligan was better.

I barely noticed her in the film. I don't understand the buzz either, it's not like it's a special role or anything. She's just kinda there at points.

Weak year + singer-turned-actor story + PC crap + her campaigning + studio campaigning + 'deglam' aspect = buzz. I'm predicting her

I actually liked her in the film. It's not an impressive performance, but solid I suppose. I will be REALLY mad and most likely riot if she steals a spot from Lesley Manville

I really liked Mudbound, but her character was just... there? It's not that she's bad, she's fine with what she's gotta do, but her part is simply one-note. There are many names from the ensemble that deserve more acclaim, like Morgan, Mitchell, Mulligan and Hedlund, I really don't know why everyone went gaga over a glorified cameo.

I'm predicting her ^This, although her BAFTA snub and her film's distributor give me a little hope that she may be passed over at the Oscars too. There isn't one memorable moment about her performance and it's a joke she even got this far. Garrett Hedlund should be the one receiving buzz for the film.

It must be a weak ass year overall for the category I guess. I've only seen 34 films so far and she is only #14 on my list. I stop ranking at #20, so she'll be gone soon I'd expect.

Garrett Hedlund should be the one receiving buzz for the film. He's my win, and it'll take some doing to knock him off.

It's actually an inordinately strong year for the category for me (which isn't really reflected all that well in what I've seen of the Academy's picks, sadly). You just have to know where to look.

Hopefully I end up loving my final lineup, which is likely months away. I'm already fairly pleased with my current nominees. 1 Michelle Pfeiffer, Mother! 2 Betty Gabriel, Get Out 3 Kirsten Dunst, The Beguiled 4 Holly Hunter, The Big Sick 5 Sophia Lillis, It

I really liked Janney, but I don't know if she's gonna make my lineup by year's end. And Blige is the worst nominee of the year from what I've seen in the big categories. Of your nominees, I really hated mother! and everyone in it, but that film is certainly one that you'll either love or revile, so I can't fault you for being on its wavelength. Gabriel was very good. Wasn't crazy about the Beguiled gals at all, because everything about that movie pales in comparison to the '71 version and I don't feel anyone really comes out of it as anything more than a "nice try," and Hunter and Lillis were terrific and will likely have spots in my lineup by year's end.

With Mother! I figured I'd come down on the revile side of that divide, so I was shocked that I quite enjoyed the film and I loved Lawrence and Pfeiffer. I'm actually quite peeved that after watching Lawrence rack up 3 undeserved nods in a row, she wasn't involved in the conversation this year, when I would personally have liked her to have been.

Well, I'll say this: even though I hated mother!, it's a far more interesting film and Lawrence is better in it than she is in American Hustle. She shouldn't be in the conversation for an Oscar nomination for it, but at least she tried something different rather than working with O. Russell again.

Yes it was, and it was enough to get an Oscar nom for. Even in a Netflix film. Idris Elba should be even more offended now.

Honestly, I find her work way more interesting than Alison Janney's. I find it so strange that people are complaining about Blige when Janney gives such a cringey one note performance.

Actually he's apparently even better in Burden.
