Happy 70th today to the often great Graham Parker who was sort of a sub-Elvis Costello but a pretty terrific one and he made at least one indisputable classic 1979's all-timer Squeezing Out Sparks.
He was also a stupendous smart ass - putting down/praising his beloved Aretha Franklin ("Obsessed With Aretha"), writing "You Can't Be Too Strong" - the best anti-abortion song ever (confounding his own politics even) and too many other examples to name but here he is arguing with God and changing the lyrics to be dissing the BBC at the end of this song ON the BBC and dissing YOU for watching the BBC too.

The original The Damned with hot shot Brian James - a guitar hero before head clown Captain Sensible switched over from bass (and James is almost not on camera here at all)........ lip synching in a great and funny performance.......I prefer them later on the Machine Gun Etiquette album (without James) but they are great here and this original lineup is reuniting for a few shows too soon.

What a bad ass band they are and hysterically funny too, I like when the drummer misses catching the stick and then the roadie, dressed like a ninja clears the stage ..........I should sing for this band if their singer wasn't already f'n great......which he is.

THE new band of 2021.....still with only 4 songs .......album drops in 2022........ and also the most slyly witty and overtly fun band in "alternative" Rock (gag) since The Pixies (maybe?)...... and the most explicitly sexual band in this genre since Elastica or Franz Ferdinand .....their debut in America last night......they're going to be huge I'm guessing...... Pitchfork STILL hasn't written about them - yeah ok .......

Amyl and The Sniffers Hertz
This pacinoyes "great period in Rock all of a sudden" started about 7 months ago - September 10th 2021 - when Amy Taylor doing her Iggy Pop evoking schtick made all of 2021's females to that point look like weepy emo girls whining about their ennui (which they were, admit it) with the release of the best Punk Rock record in many years, my #2 of 2021, the best Australian album in a looooooong time too (since Royal Headache's High in 2015 maybe?) and the wildest of this exhilarating, suddenly cool "New Wave of Bad-Ass Women in Rock" thing we're right in the middle of atm ( Rhian Teasdale, Kate Clover, Lucy Ellis, Lia Metcale, Jess Eastwood and many others now...) Last night's performance - their US TV debut. That's (I think) "Well Fnck" - uncensored - with her back to the camera at the end - that classic Punk Rock Move never gets old. Except when I censor the curse words I mean ..........because that sh*t is tiresome.

Kate Jackson & Dorian Cox of The Long Blondes Once and Never Again (acoustic)
Kate Jackson was a thrift shop genius / Diva / Fashion Plate - she shows up in my Celebrity Crush posts sometimes.....they were really great for a stretch around 2006.......never saw this until today, wtf......

AC/DC Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - 1976 on Australian TVWhat a great performance this is - like a Punk Rock band with the crowd very close and with the kids rushing the stage and the band just shaking it off. Bon Scott - singing live over a taped music track - was the David Lee Roth of non-US hard rock bands - a real showman, very funny and ironic - quite a routine he's got going here - he seems more like Stiv Bators tbh than Robert Plant or Ian Gillan...........which also includes totally blowing the lyrics.

This is like hearing two angels right here. Emmylou Harris and Alison Krauss covering The Everly Brothers.

The energy of this crowd is a sight to behold. Maybe the most punk live performance I've seen.
The guitar solo is simply incredible.
My first exposure to Joy Division. I remember seeing this video for the first time about 15+ years ago while in high school and they quickly became one of my favorite bands.

The Speedways Your Brown Eyes Look So Blue- Live in London, last night - July 2nd, 2022
World's best band (non- Fontaines D.C. division) in the front row are 3 girls who are laughing, dancing, singing, hugging, swapping swigs of water bottles together. At one point one takes off her jacket, at other points in this show they are possibly kissing......what a band! A new interview online says they almost broke up, new single in September, new album in November - album is apparently more complex (uh-oh), diverse (uh-oh, again), everybody writes (wtf), Matt Speedway / Matt Julian doesn't sing every song this time (wtf, again)....... and they'd like to play in the U.S. but have no plans to atm.......hmmmmmmm

Fontaines D.C. A Hero's Death on The Tonight ShowLook man, I don't bust on people enough for their music taste or movie taste - or acting tastes - or political opinions - though honestly - those all aren't great MAR But when it comes to this band - I will: If you are not stunned by this song, in this version, or this album (and many weren't in 2020 when I raved it) or this band, I give up on you. Have a nice plebby life ........
World's best band (non-Speedways division), - in front of a big American TV audience - not just playing it on stage but reconceiving it entirely - with a big swinging dick swagger unheard of in "Rock" apart from them..... If I didn't already know (and love) this band and saw this on TV, I would probably lose my shit, punch the wall, and steal some little kids lunch money to buy their records and beer and a book of poetry.......though that's a lot of stuff so I may have to steal from several kids. Stupendous......

I'm sure JT isn't very popular around here but this performance is top top quality really. Also one of the bery best pop songs of the first half of its decade
And this is probably my favorite song from my favoriter live performance of all time. Immaculate in its entirety.

A real find - Holly Beth Vincent - in I think her only TV Appearance (?) doing Youth Coup and over the credits Rock Against Romance from her sort of great-ish debut Holly & The Italians - The Right To Be Italian (1981) - reviewed in the (last) Rate The Last Record You Listened To Thread.
I've been playing her whole catalog and even though she only has that 1 "classic" imo - she scattered a lot of great songs over hard to find albums, singles, demos.....another key "lost" figure in cult - Rock and Roll and who kind of got a raw deal and often had her songs - especially some good ballads - botched in over-production ...she deserves a comprehensive, career spanning boxset tbh...

Fontaines D.C. Roman Holiday on The Late Late Show Sep 15 2022
Great week, huh?
James Corden calls Skinty Fia "brilliant" in his introducton - well someone give that dude a donut because he ain't wrong - and the great Irish band - maybe the greatest, from there - ever, already - in their typical BDE form using repetition like no one else does in Rock and tipping their hat to the Queen's passing "I don't wanna see the Queen, I already sing her song" one of the year's best lines on the year's best album atm .......a record filled with a bunch of memorable lines.
Only Ones shirt on the guitarist btw......

Say what you want about the Bowie-isms / Ferry-isms of this - like Four Out Of Five from the last album - Alex really can sell this kind of stuff in performance.

The Speedways - New Full TV Radio 3 Concert - 30 minutes - full performance
I love this band ........but they have a new album due November 21st - with 4 songs (out of 13) not written by the best songwriter in Power Pop at all (Matt Julian) and only 7 that he wrote alone with 2 co-writes. That's a recipe for disaster for a band that has been almost "perfect" so far because of his songs. But this new 30 minute performance which takes songs from all 3 original albums (nothing from their covers record) ............is .........yeah awesome. Enjoy: www.rtve.es/play/videos/los-conciertos-de-radio-3/the-speedways/6711745/

I know, I know, The Replacements did this song better - and they recorded it - but that's just because The Replacements actually were better than ....um........anybody, ever..... - but when do you ever see Bowie joining anyone to cover Marc Bolan / T.Rex? Pretty cool - I had forgotten this.....also it's "Everybody says it's just like Robin Hood" ......people always mess that line up .........but Bowie - a student of the game dontchaknow - knows what's up........

One of the best bands in the world in 2023. Playing some of their best music to date. I wish they'd just put these songs on an album ffs ... but it seems like they're not planning on it ... though I'll gladly take this anyway.

The Bobby Lees on KEXP - June 12, 2023
America's best Rock and Roll band atm - touring behind America's best Rock and Roll album of 2022 (the awesome Bellevue) - they are like having multiple strokes and multiple heart attacks simultaneously while going blind from syphilis.
