Please no Chalamet I think it's probably a foregone conclusion he wins here, but with them releasing runner-up ballot numbers, it'll be very interesting to see where things shake out.

That Manville mention gives me hope that Phantom Thread could do well here, especially now that more people have seen it.

I'm glad for Metcalf. My favourite performance in the movie.

I'm glad for Metcalf. My favourite performance in the movie. I wish I could agree, but she isn't even my favorite supporting actress of her film (I'd rate Smith and Feldstein ahead of her). I like her as an actress in general, though, so I'm happy for her success. It's not like a Patricia Arquette scenario where I cannot conceive of why people are losing their minds.

Yes, I like that they released ballot numbers. I wish that LAFCA did that, and while I wish NYFCC did that too, I'll just settle for them releasing who the runner-ups were. Like with Best Supporting Actress, the televised awards could still go another way, but Metcalf won pretty handily here, and with Lady Bird being so strong, I think she can win the televised awards too. With Best Actress, I know Hawkins has won the most critics' awards, and I've been considering actually predicting her for the Oscar win despite not thinking so all season if she wins the Globe tomorrow. It could still happen, but the vote here was pretty close. So I'm still thinking that Ronan can win the Oscar because she's more in line with the trend of a younger actress winning over a previous winner or an outsider who has the critics behind her even if it's an atypical role. Of course, if Robbie wins the Globe tomorrow, maybe I'll go back to predicting Robbie again, lol.

I generally don't put much stock in where the Globes go unless there is a massive swerve from a presumed "favorite" (like when Huppert beat Portman). I think Ronan's still got the edge with McDormand hot on her heels because of how well Three Billboards has done. I genuinely think that for Hawkins to win, Shape of Water might have to take Picture and Director as well (and of course she'd have to clean house with the industry precursors). I still don't yet buy Robbie as the winner, but merely as the "welcome to the club" nominee who wins further down the line.

Kaluuya creeps up to the top and Day-Lewis starts to gain steam.

What the NSFC does is shape the field. So, for Best Actor, it doesn't matter much if they listed 10 people and nobody voted for Oldman - it's too middle brow for their snobbery anyway (like all awards they are rife with corruption even if I am closer to their taste than say LAFC or God forbid, NBR). So, you have to look outside the winner to find your narrative - Oldman, Chalamet, DDL, probably Franco I guess are all in. Who else is in - who cracks the top 5? Well Tom Hanks just got told to Get Out......

Franco is likely winning the Globe tomorrow unless Kaluuya spoils (which is looking surprisingly likely), and The Post is somehow waning in strength. So yeah, I think Hanks misses out once again.

Yes this all but killed Tom Hanks chances at getting a nod. I don't think NSFC killed Hanks's chances, because NSFC (and all critics' groups, really) have no say in the industry prizes. Hanks missing out at SAG and the film showing a surprising weakness save for Streep (who even now is starting to flag, when there were talks she could win her fourth only a few months ago) is more damaging. Hell, The Post's narrative has largely centered on Streep and not Hanks; NSFC not going for him doesn't really affect him one way or the other, except I guess to show that neither he nor Streep were on enough voters' ballots.

I've been a dedicated Dafoe fan since forever and his performance is my favorite of the year, up there with Stanton in "Lucky". So I'm so goddamn happy about this.

The Deak beats Hoyte by a single vote.
Fun fact: the last time an NSFC Cinematography winner took home the Oscar was in 2008.

Another tight vote for Screenplay: Gerwig pips Peele to the post by a single vote, and PTA has a healthy third place finish.

And Lady Bird wins the big one by two votes. Healthy Phantom Thread support as well.
