Favorite? Underrated? Top 5? Best perf I think is probably Sex Lies & Videotape. He's absolutely hilarious in The Office. Also a fan of his work in White Palace - especially that all timer line.....

Nothing tops sex, lies and videotape.
But he's been pretty great on NBC's The Blacklist for the last few years. Pretty solid combination of menace, dark humor & pathos. More people need to check it out.

Lincoln. He should've taken Jones's slot.

I only really know him from Boston Legal. I could watch Alan and Denny lawyering all day. One of the most entertaining network TV shows ever, and Spader was a big part of that.

His absolute best performance is in "The Music of Chance" (1993). Then there's of course all those "Sex, Lies and Videotape", "Jack's Back", "Secretary", "New Kids", "Crash", "White Palace" - all great performances. "Dream Lover" (no one mentioned it?), "Bad Influence" and "The Stickup" are also underrated, entertaining little thrillers.
It's just I didn't care enough to keep on watching "The Blacklist". So I wish he'd be making more movies.

I didn't see "Twin Peaks" at that time, so Dream Lover was my introduction to her and what an introduction: I fell in love right there. Still find it weird that her movie career didn't take off after that considering she was talented enough and so goddamn hot.

His best performance is either The Music of Chance or Sex, Lies & Videotapes, but he's been good in everything that I've seen him in.
Also say what you will about the film, but I think he was very good as Ultron (yeah I'm a bit of a fanboy, so what?).

Some stuff already mentioned I like a whole lot and some of it is very Pacinoesque too - Music of Chance (practically a Dustin Hoffman/Pacino impression), SL&V, I love Dream Lover and Madchen Amick has the sexiest eyebrows ever (no really), Tuff Turf is a guilty pleasure and Kim Richards has the sexiest 80s dresses ever (no really), Secretary and The Office are all good........I like him in Bad Influence but its a let down version of the even better Apartment Zero so that bothers me - its good though
Not mentioned ........Baby Boom!
Kevin Spacey in some ways took over the smart Caucasian dick role that Spader had staked out as his own....

Thought I'd bump this thread bc I just watched Dream Lover and Spader's performance is astounding. I might, mighttttt consider it among the decade best for lead actor. I liked the movie, even though those dream sequences don't work and the narrative relies a little too much on many convenient moves, but bc of Amick and Spader, their tense and enigmatic chemistry keep it quite engaging. Tho, Spader is operating on a deeper level.... his performance is completely great, down to the minute inflections on certain words, to how he outlines the inevitable in an unblinking possessed way, he's consumed, and all the while never lets the character slip too far from our sympathy.
I still have a lot left to see from Spader but I love the way he can make a character so uncanny within believable straits. I kinda worded that weird but y'know? He's usually really crafty, mixing a loose and articulatory quality with some absorbing degree of thoughtful tensity. It shows in how he'll register information, like how he reacts off other actors, eyework etc, usually inspired and involved and interesting.
To bring it current, he of course has a knack for these intelligent, wry characters and it's in that space he's been coasting on TV this century (ok, I haven't seen Blacklist or Boston Legal, he's probably amazing in them, what do I know)..... but his "appeal" way behind him, are his leading actor days for sure over? What kinda project could he headline? Will it just be TV for him? Or maybe more supporting character work?

As a lot of people have said, Sex, Lies, and Videotape is probably his best performance, but i’ll give a shoutout to Secretary. While the story is mainly told from Maggie Gyllenhaal’s perspective, he manages to bring a lot of interesting complexion to a character who’s very insecure about his sexual fetishes.
He also deserves a lot of credit for elevating The Blacklist. Without him, it’d be another boring network procedural. And I mean, it’s not exactly fantastic or groundbreaking but Spader certainly makes it entertaining and generally watchable.

Recently watched The Music of Chance.....
Another great Spader performance and one very unlike anything else he's done I believe. The pic is pretty good, I like the first act a lot before they get to the mansion - then it becomes more overtly Beckettian and we're very aware we're watching an allegory but the interplay is more-or-less kept interesting btwn Mandy Patinkin and Spader who especially injects the movie with humor and life - there's a sense of his rolling confidence covering up a semi-sleazy but sad desperation. His voice sounds quite like Dennis Farina's I thought. But the character's charismatic faux-bombast and greasy downtrod quality reminded me of Hoffman's Ratso Rizzo!
Updated top 5 - Dream Lover SL&V Music of Chance White Palace Bad Influence
Idk what to watch next, hmm...
