not necessarily the best, just those who are making exciting stuff: medina godard korine sono (probs #1) diaz malick paul ws anderson edelman tscherkassky lynch Can we stop this Paul Thomas Wes Anderson meme? it's mostly just because his last film knocked it outta the park for me and i think he can continue to make films like this. there's always been moments of greatness in his films, just rare to see them come together so much, and seeing other films like The Final Chapter sounds v exciting.

I'm trying to just include directors that even if they had a long time working their latest work still interest me otherwise it would be a different list.
No order: Park Chan-wook Jim Jarmusch Pedro Almodovar Wes Anderson Claire Denis Michael Haneke Olivier Assayas David Cronenberg Jia Zhangke Xavier Dolan Wong Kar Wai Sofia Coppola Guillermo del Toro Bennett Miller Coens

- Glad to see people start recognizing Noe for the talent that he is. - Scorsese's last film was really great and I hope he makes more films in the existential ballpark instead of a bunch of crime stuff. - Villeneuve's last three films I enjoyed just fine but they have been a huge step-down from his previous more experimental work (think Maelstrom and August 32nd on Earth). - Nolan is pretty solid for a Hollywood director but The Dark Knight Rises was so terrible that it is hard for me to follow him. - Fincher hasn't made a significant film since Fight Club and yes that film is great, just completely misunderstood by the quasi-nihilist fuckboys it satirizes. - Inarritu is the real meme director that keeps getting mentioned (besides Chazelle, screw that guy). He has some talent and a few decent movies to his name (Amores Perros is great stuff) but is such a misguided hack overall. - Paul Thomas Anderson has talent, especially in creating atmosphere and directing actors... but I don't know if he really excites me nowadays. I also am trying to justify any reason to still like There Will Be Blood unironically.

I also am trying to justify any reason to still like There Will Be Blood unironically. Since this is an indirect "Unpopular Opinion" post, I can justify a reply. -The crime films are kind of what he's known for. If The Irishman is as good as The Wolf of Wall Street, then he'll get credit for still having any original input into the gangster genre this late into the game. -Don't see Nolan as very Hollywood. Maybe a few of his films. You could argue his last 3 films as that...(haven't seen Dunkirk), but surely there are better examples of a modern Hollywood director. -His The Social Network and after period is definitely a step down from old Fincher. I do have a longing for the man who injected some vitality into the Alien franchise, and was an up-and-coming talent with Se7en. Films after that are good, but I personally have an affinity to his 1992-1995 period. -His 1999-2007 is his worst period. He's since resurrected himself, and he was... curiously interesting as a young director. always welcome to reply - don't get me wrong, I like a lot of Scorsese's films, even the crime ones, and The Wolf of Wall Street was really good. I just especially liked Silence and would like to see him go down that route more often rather than making more crime films. - wouldn't working within the Hollywood system define him as a Hollywood director? I meant he does stand out among other Hollywood directors, like with his own vision and style. - I like Se7en as well. I think Se7en was one his second best. I haven't seen Alien 3 yet. - I generally like PTA's films when and after watching them, but I can't say I am ever really excited in hearing a new one is coming out.

Definitely Nolan, then Spielberg.
Others would include Eastwood, Jeunet, Inarritu, Cuaron, Scorsese, Wong Kar Wai.
Villeneuve also joined this list recently.
Also always interested in seeing what Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Fatih Akin and Yojiro Takita are doing.
