The Americans series finale for sure comes right near the top of the list, probably in the top 5 or so.

God, I need to catch up on The Americans (don't ask... I'm far behind...).

I haven't seen enough TV shows to put together a worthy top 10. The ending of Twin Peaks: The Return is definitely my favorite. I think the only one that could dethrone that is the Season 2 ending of Twin Peaks, which I obviously can't really count anymore as a series finale. I also love the final episode of Lost. The last season was kind of a mess but that finale was an emotional powerhouse and is hugely underrated due in part to a lot of people not understanding it. I can't even remember how many people have said they liked the show but not the ending because they were "dead the whole time"... Buffy's finale was alright. But the Season 5 ending, which was initially going to be the final episode IIRC, was great.

Re: Lost Finale: The scene with Jack and Christian in the back of the church is just SUCH a gut punch of emotion! Add Ben and Locke outside the church... and of course, Vincent coming up to be there with Jack as he dies. Fuck the haters, I love that finale.

What other shows have finales that could rival the likes of The Americans and Six Feet Under?

Cowboy Bebop. The show is mercifully short and doesn't jump the shark the way 95% of everything else does. The ending was clearly planned from the start, and the whole show was building towards that goal.

Mr. Robot has the best finale I've seen.

The Sopranos, easily. It's the type of narrative trick that really can't ever be used again. What better way to highlight the fragility and sanctity of life in all its contradictions and absurdities and tragedies than to pull the rug out from under you and end it all when you least expect it? And in such a banal, abrupt, seemingly random way, just as it would be in life. It's one of the best, most truthful endings in storytelling history. Other great ones: Twin Peaks Community The Wire Peep Show The Office (UK) Extras FleabagSherlock

The Shield is a massive contender for best finale ever, I'd say right up there with The Americans in the top two.
Other great finales include (not necessarily in this order):
Mad Men Sopranos Fleabag The Wire Breaking Bad Mr. Robot Justified

This is due an update.
1) "The Book of Nora" - The Leftovers 2) "START" - The Americans 3) "Person to Person" - Mad Men 4) "Nice While it Lasted" - Bojack Horseman 5) "Family Meeting" - The Shield 6) "-30-" - The Wire 7) "Everyone's Waiting" - Six Feet Under 8) "Made in America" - The Sopranos 9) "Episode 6" - Fleabag 10) "Discos and Dragons" - Freaks and Geeks
Maybe I should give the Breaking Bad finale another watch, but I've grow increasingly cool towards it over the years. It's a far from bad way to wrap things up, but it really couldn't have been more conventional. I also owe the Sopranos finale another watch, as I can't remember too much outside of that (perfect) final scene. If the end of Twin Peaks: The Return is really the end, then that's hovering around the list as well.
