Starring Jennifer Jones and Montgomery Clift - have you guys seen this one? If so, what did you think?
The film was an Italian-American co-production - de Sica and David O. Selznick shared the credit, and there was reportedly a huge tug-of-war between the two of them - de Sica envisioned neorealist bleakness (with the support of Jones and Clift), while Selznick wanted a more "Hollywood" version.
The trouble behind the scenes certainly colors the film, and in truth, it's not very good. But there's much to admire here - Jones and Clift are both wonderful - their tragic theatrical strokes suit the rather stilted pitch beautifully. Christian Dior's Oscar-nominated costumes are sumptuous, too.
