I have heard of Morfydd Clark, Peter Mullan, and Benjamin Walker!
Are they filming in the US?

On the other hand, by casting unknowns they can get better immersion if the actors are good eniough. Casting a Sean Bean is a smart idea, but let's not forget that most of GoT was made of nobodies when it started. True, but they spent roughly $60M for the first season of GoT... only about $400M less. With Jeff Bezo's NetWorth, it's pretty clear that money is no object for him. 400 million is pocket change to him. He and Amazon can spend like Netflix, except it's his own money and he won't be in debt to anyone. And even with a cast of mostly unknowns, 400 million + on a season for tried and tested major Sci-fi/fantasy property with huge scale special effects is surely a better investment than that ridiculous sum Netflix paid for the Knives Out sequels. It's still a ludicrous amount to spend on one season of TV for anything, but this is what can happen with streaming wars for money is no object billionaires and conglomerates. They already created their own hit streaming franchise with The Boys, so I can see why a Lord Of The Rings TV show makes perfect sense to try and consolidate them as a major streaming rival to Netflix and Disney + It's the kind of property with a following to attract a lot of new subscribers, with or without star names attached.

Even if the show is a hit, there's no way they're making back that money. They have to be counting on Tolkien nerds going nuts buying merchandise off Amazon.

That's Rivendell, isn't it?
Edit: On closer look, that doesn't look like Rivendell. There are two giant trees in the backgrounds. Are those ents?

Amazon's creative process of shitting out cash and throwing it at an IP expecting quality didn't work so well for Wheel of Time. My expectations for this could not be lower. You can't buy good writing.

Looks way too CGI-ed. I'm laughing because Wheel of Time the book series (I read the first 10 or 12) is a low-rent LoTR rip-off, and this looks scarcely better than the Wheel of Time series, despite a ridiculous budget.

Me watching the Superbowl ad:
"Wait... OMG IT'S THE LORD OF THE RINGS!!!"
*as the trailer passes*
"Damnit, it's the fucking Hobbit 3..."

Not even Peter Mullan looking like Santa Claus can entice me to suffer through this.

It doesn't look as terrible as I thought, but one thing that struck me with both this and the House of the Dragon trailer is how expensive these shows are trying to look. They are really showing off their budgets and it's making them conversely feel kinda cheap and factory-produced (and kinda thirsty). The original LOTR was long-in-the-making labor of love that required innovation and experimentation and GoT was a big risk for HBO in the early 2010s and they had to work on a limited budget. As GoT progressed the change in budget was felt with the final season being the biggest and most expensive but also the worst and most lifeless. And season 7 sucked too, but the point is that this doesn't look like the Middle Earth in Jackson's films and HotD doesn't look like the Westeros of early GoT. Something's off. I'm just worried Rings of Power and House of the Dragon are going to fall under the weight of their ridiculously bloated resources, and obviously that already happened to the embarrassing Wheel of Time. I'm worried they might be too big not to fail.

I still have no idea of what the tone or story are supposed to be. This is just pitiful. All I've got out of this is "Galadriel = Girlboss."

2 episodes in. Decent so far. Tolkien's world is so vast that it took two episodes to introduce characters and lands. There's some drama brewing, and signs of conflict can be seen. We have our protagonist in Galadriel. Morfydd Clark does look good as an elven warrior, but her face is not that expressive. This new guy as Elrond is a bit hard to digest after a charismatic actor like Hugo Weaving.
The visuals are stunning though. Writing could be tight. Looking forward to the rest.
