I stopped being surprised over this kind of news a long time ago, but it's still pretty funny. Of course they're going to do this.

please don't... (even though Tolkien's universe could offer us a great TV Series...but who needs that after the three fantastic films Peter Jackson made??

Weren't the films enough? I really want to know what those who criticized Return of the King’s extended ending (unfairly, I say) are thinking right now? They must be terrified that something even worse is on the way.

ehhh, why. we were all perfectly satisfied with the movie. a show would just drag out the boring sh-it and become something like The Hobbit trilogy

I'm no expert on things, but given I do have a balanced check book... how do they plan to account for such a steep budget on a medium that doesn't allow for advertisement? Well, at least this makes more sense than the $150M on The Roll (Netflix!)... not much more, but more.

So this is a prequel. Glad that they're exploring something in between Hobbit and LOTR. link

The show taking place in the Second Age means quite a bit. For starters, it’s an age that wasn’t explored much by J.R.R. Tolkien, meaning most of the stories won’t be his and will be thought up by the show’s writers - for better or for worse. Though many rumors pointed towards the show focusing on Aragorn, who lived in the Third Age, it’s possible flash backs, or flash forwards, could occur in the show. link

I don't know who any of these people are. They're going to need to cast some people who regular Joe Schmoe is going to know if they want this series to grow. I'm sorry but using the dude who played young Ned Stark in that one episode for 5 minutes shouldn't be your top selling point.

Even if the show is a hit, there's no way they're making back that money.

On the other hand, by casting unknowns they can get better immersion if the actors are good enough. Casting a Sean Bean is a smart idea, but let's not forget that most of GoT was made of nobodies when it started.

True, but they spent roughly $60M for the first season of GoT... only about $400M less.
