..amidst a sexual advance accusation by Anthony Rapp back in the 1980's. Spacey just tweeted twenty minutes ago that he apologizes and that it's time to admit he's a gay man.
That was long overdue, and I weirdly congratulate him, although under very off-putting circumstances. That said, though, using this time to flip his own story into one of positivity is kind of baffling and unsettling.

Holy shit, this has been a whirlwind half-year with celebrity news.

This is one of the most cynical bits of PR I've ever seen. To try to turn a story of him preying on a 14-year-old into his big coming out is unbelievably low. The fact that it's working for some online and in the media is just sickening.

The late Robin Williams expressing my personal feelings about Spacey's shameless efforts to make himself look like the victim:

He's being bashed as deflecting this into his coming out story.

Did not expect this from you Kevin. You could have reserved your 'coming out' for another time.

Again, like in the other thread, I will post this as my reaction to him trying to avert attention from the accusations and trying to make it look like he was the victim and not Rapp. f What part of the statement gave you the impression that he's trying to be the victim here ? If anything it says that he's going to look at his own person and evaluate his actions. And I don't think he could've keep his coming out story for another time, it would've been ridiculous.

This might be the worst coming out of all time. The context makes it terrible for the gay community! Also, don't be surprised if this isn't the only allegation made against Spacey involving young males in the industry.

I agree with Carrie. The fact that he's coming out as a consequence of being accused of molestation doesn't make gay people look good in the picture. But that's not all. Why can't people realize that speaking about homossexuality in these terms will only help to reinforce the misthought that it is a choice/life style? He should have known better... The more I think about it, the more I belive that this is the worst coming out ever.

And I'm bothered by his statement trying to say he was drunk. No one cares that you were drunk, Kevin Spacey. If a straight man had done that to a little girl, no one would care that he was drunk. It's still horrible!

Well, the shoe finally dropped. Reports about Spacey’s “transgressions” have been floating around since the 90s. I don’t think most people realize the extent of his backroom shenanigans. And his non-apology apology/coming out statement is so problematic I don’t even know where to begin.
Waiting for the Bryan Singer accusers to come out of the woodwork now.

Way to make us look bad and reinforce bullshit misconceptions, Kevin. I'm still just a teen myself, but I still hate to think how some idiotic twats will use this 'coming out'.

I've heard rumors about Spacey being gay/bi but I've never heard anything about him molesting boys or younger men. Not saying those stories are not true, though.

Seth MacFarlane wrote this in 2005. Seth also knew about Harvey so I'm guessing there's more to come out about Spacey (directly or indirectly).
Like Weinstein's strange statement about going after the NRA, Spacey's statement seems like he's trying to get ahead of something and gain sympathy.

The fact that it's working for some online and in the media is just sickening. Seriously. I'm seeing major publisher headlines about Kevin Spacey coming out, but very few of them mention the Rapp accusations. It's a tactic worthy of Frank Underwood. I don't think it'll work, though. As Matt Oswalt said, looks like we will have a President brought down for sexual assault after all.

It's still horrible! Do you believe that Rapp is telling the truth , though ? I think the way Kevin Spacey responded spoke volumes. Of course, we know there have been rumors for years about Bryan Singer's seedy parties with underaged males, and in some cases, the rumors had Kevin Spacey associated with that scene. But of course, they were just rumors at the time that we hoped weren't true.

I hope in the next few days more people can have the courage to come forward and tell their cases. This can't be passed on.

I'm not defending Spacey at all, but to be fair to this one phrase, he clearly states that he is bi in his statement. So he's basically saying that he's choosing to live with a man instead of a woman, I believe? I don't think he is officially living with anyone, though, so I could be misreading. The whole statement is a mess.

Do you believe that Rapp is telling the truth , though ? Why on earth would he make this up? Yes, I remember back before social media is like it is now, seeing blind items on this quote from Rapp. The AdvocatePlus, I'm not sure why Rapp would want to make up something like that. I remember him since Adventures With Babysitting, and every once in awhile he'll pop up in something that I'll watch over the years, or sometimes give an interview like the one he did back almost 20 years ago for The Advocate, but for the most part, he's always been an under the radar character actor. He doesn't seem like the type that would come forward just to publicity for himself, and instead feels like he's now coming forward because the flood gates have started to open now after the Weinstein scandal. I think he's just trying to get more people to be open about Spacey but also others that are like Spacey and Weinstein, so that maybe the cycle of abuse will finally end someday.

This reeks of things I used to do as a kid...
"I ripped my jeans horsing around with my friends but I got a 100 on my spelling test!!!" It's acknowledging the issue but immediately countering it with something that's good/nice/what-have-you hoping that everyone forgets the actual issue at hand.
