I mean this in the sense of someone like Dave Grohl somewhat - certainly he's the only guy who was the drummer in one huge band, and then formed another huge band where he doesn't even play drums, lol - I can't think of anyone quite like him in that way.............but I mean it for someone you personally like and artistically too regardless of their success

How about Johnny Thunders?

Thunders is a good one although his greatness was short-lived in all its forms - 2 Dolls albums, 1 Heartbreakers and 1 great solo one in So Alone. Still those are 4 stupendous records in just 6 years .....and most people in one great band never get the chance to be in a second one.
Eric Clapton in some ways was like that also as a crazy short term musician in a lot of acclaimed stuff before he went solo around age 27 - briefly in the Yardbirds, Cream, the Blues Breakers, Derek and the Dominoes, Blind Faith and a limited discography with all except Cream (4 albums) and all of those have something that would be called great.

Listening to Neil Young's masterpiece (imo) "Tonight's The Night" and it might sound silly now but I would have thought that at one point you'd have him pegged as a collaborator (Buffalo Springfield, CSNY) much more than a solo performer.....now of course that seems ridiculous, but......

Audioslave, off the top of my head.
Velvet Revolver would be another one for me... not that big on their second album, but I'm still a big fan of their first.
