Caroline Aaron - Right from the start of her career, she was working with major directors who clearly liked her. She worked with Altman twice, John Sayles twice, Mike Nichols five times, Woody Allen five times (twice as his sister). Always in smaller roles, often Jewish-overt characters (This Is My Life, Curb Your Enthusiasm) but she has an incredible knack to gel into scenes in a very funny, natural way. I recently watched The Brother From Another Planet and Cellular.... she gets one scene in these movies, it's easy to overlook but I'm kinda shocked at how seamless her acting is even then. Mrs Maisel that she's currently doing is a career high mark, she's underrated in that ensemble.....and kinda unpredictable, mixing hilarity with vitriol.

TOM WILKINSON. Just an incredible actor who's versatile. I remember being so blown away by his performance in Michael Clayton
Also, Peter Mullan. I was so mad that he wasn't even nominated for an Emmy for his performance as James Delos in Westworld. He blew me away in the fidelity test episode. I was dumbfounded

Will Sampson - His first four movies he played opposite the most popular actors - Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson. And held his own! Discovered bull riding on the rodeo circuit, he was casted and unforgettable in One Flew even tho it reshapes his character from the novel (where he's the narrator). Then there's Altman's Buffalo Bill as a translator, Outlaw Josey Wales where despite the very brief role he has really remarkable, immediate presence... and then arguable co-lead of The White Buffalo in a more layered part... also in 1977 he pops up in Orca and.... Relentless a CBS movie but the first time a Hollywood production ever had a sole Native American lead. He plays a heroic Arizona trooper trailing a gang of robbers and he's pretty good! with the composure of a star... only 11 views on Letterboxd, so it's very underseen. Not familiar with his later work but clearly the opportunities were barely there and he was passionate about opening up Native American portrayal.... He once joked so many Italians have played Indians, he'd like to play Italian for a change. In Relentless a partner calls him kemosabe and he very soberly says "Quit it. No more." He died fairly young (53) before the '90s where he might've had an encore of opportunities.

The always incredible and magnetic Elizabeth Perkins I always ask me, what happened to her? Yep I know that later she become a Emmy Winner or Nominee for Weeds. But why she dessapeared in the mid 90s, and she wasn't alone Penelope Anne Miller, Nancy Travis, Moira Kelly for example had the same luck, and jeanne tripplehorn survived the 90s, but not the next decade (despite her success on TV in the seccond half of the 2000's decade). But returning to the whole point, maybe Perkins started too late in her late 20s, maybe was because of the bad received Flinstones, or maybe she had made very few titles before the Flinstones, (mostly succesful, but also mostly supporting and co-leading, never the lead), so unlike the rest of the cast, couldn't mantain her stardom.- Elizabeth Perkins maybe was relative

Bruno Kirby - I was reading some of the still free stuff that Jeffrey Wells has on his site (the rest is behind a paywall) and one of his stories up there was about how Billy Crystal and Kirby had a big falling out and how it hurt his later career. Kind of a sad story - not sure if it's actually true though - some of the details are sketchy .....but he was a great character actor at his best - from Godfather II to City Slickers to Donnie Brasco ..... RIP

Lynn Carlin - "I've got lots to say. You wanna try me?" She was 27 when she filmed Faces..... Cassavetes cast her while she was working as Robert Altman's secretary at Columbia. Oscar nominated for that... a win would've reallllly helped her career bc altho she started strong - Taking Off (BAFTA nodded), Tick Tick Tick - she was quickly typecast as the middle aged housewife (even tho she was in her early 30s) and had to round robin guest spots on tv. Critics who liked her didn't do a great job illuminating her - the NYT: “a plain Jane actress with interestingly droopy eyelids." In those first three movies there are very similar scenes with her at the dinner table uncontrollably laughing. She was an open, unpredictable actress. She might've made a great Eleanor Roosevelt, or maybe a Woody Allen part? Only once was her typecasting really clever - Bob Clark's Deathdream opposite her Faces costar John Marley. Still alive at 83y/o...

Senta Berger, because unlike other sexpot of the 60s and 70s she continue her career in Germany and Austria, specially on TV becoming one of the most awarded actress in the little Screen in Germany. She started in Austrian theatres in her teens in the 50s, and maybe because all these training, she had being succesful for over 60 years in the business.- Not only but also, she is top billed in the most succesful German film at Box Office in 2016 Willkommen bei den Hartmanns. Immagine at 75 still being the most succesful German Speaking Actress at Box Office.- She started in her teens in Austrian theatre and Films, but her most succesful film was at 75, that's a record, I guess!!! I guess she is right now, the most underated actress of the European Film history

Ritchie Coster - Always dig this guy, British but often jumps around nationality/ethnicity... Usually villainous but underrated outside of that too (Luck). No upcoming projects "My dogs are HUNGRY!" ha outstanding choice. That's disappointing to hear he doesn't have ANY upcoming roles though.

Eddie Marsan Awesome and always reliable British actor. I most recently watched him in The Disappearance of Alice Creed and was so impressed with how versatile of an actor he is. He has worked with a lot of big time directors such as Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann, Steven Spielberg, Terrence Malick, Woody Allen, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, J.J. Abrams, Peter Berg, Guy Ritchie and Richard Linklater. He has a very self depreciating sense of humor too which is refreshing. I love his quote here " I sometimes think if I had gone to Oxford or Cambridge and looked like a handsome young guy who could be in an Evelyn Waugh novel or something, I'd be a massive movie star. But there's a longevity to what I do. It's more reliable. Someone isn't deciding that I'm the next big thing. Because if they're deciding I'm the next big thing, they can decide that someone else is the next big thing.
" He was outstanding on Showtime's Ray Donovan and I can't wait to see the Ray Donovan movie coming out in 2022 (glad that show is getting a proper ending)

When it comes to top generational talents, we really don't talk enough about Ben Foster. Awards success has largely eluded him so far, but the man has notched a bevy of sterling performances to his name, and he has proven to be one of the most intensely focused actors there is. Performances like 3:10 to Yuma, Alpha Dog and Hell or High Water show his capacity for searing turns, but Foster's also brilliantly gifted at subtle nuance. Leave No Trace is a masterclass in exploring trauma; I feel like if you swapped Phoenix out for him in You Were Never Really Here, it would've been equally as effective and affecting. I really hope awards bodies start paying him notice really soon; he's well overdue for it.

He has a great stint on My Name is Earl but going back even further, my introduction to Foster was as the wacky lead in a Disney show called Flash Forward in a proto-Shia Labeouf in Even Stevens type of role. What's fun about this show is that there's two episodes where he faces off against a rival played by another generational talent, although one a bit more mainstream, in Ryan Gosling. It's pretty cool seeing two of their generation's top actors performing together at such a young age. Hopefully they'll reunite in a more serious production someday. Here's a clip of the two of them, in all its cheesy '90s kids show glory.

I vaguely remember Flash Forward growing up and had no clue Gosling had a guest appearance on it. Who would have guessed those two would become imo the best actors of their generation (actors born in the 80s). Foster & Gosling sure have come a long way in their careers that's for sure. Also agree that Foster should try comedy more often (he had some funny moments in Hell or High Water as the crazy/unpredictable older brother) He does have a role in the upcoming Adam Sandler/Netflix comedy called Hustle (not sure what his role will be though) imo Foster would be great in a Coen brothers comedy or a Wes Anderson film. Either way I agree with you & stephen that it'd be great if Foster got more recognition from the Academy and other major awards because he is always overlooked. I do have high hopes for his role as Harry Haft (the Jewish boxer that fought fellow prisoners in concentration camps to survivor) Its called The Survivor and is directed by Barry Levinson (it could be a huge role for Foster and Barry Levinson is a good director so we shall see)

Just read a fascinating interview with the fascinating Julianne Nicholson who most probably know from Law & Order: Criminal Intent but she's popped up a lot in (mostly) indie movies and TV in the last decade - always interesting and unique. Apparently she's in a new Kate Winslet movie TV thing (?).......also when she leaves her hair long she reminds me of Sissy Spacek. Just over a year since I posted this..........a lot can change in a year, huh?

Germán Baudino - This guy is in my favorite movie of this year so far - very memorable - heck just from that trailer History of The Occult (maybe) coming to Netflix Oct 15th (?)........he's the lead in Abrakadabra (2018) which I saw this year for the first time and have talked about a lot - a sort of half great - half utterly baffling giallo update that I at least "guilty pleasure" love too. It's been a long time since I noticed a Horror movie actor and I haven't seen anything else by him but so far ........he's 2 for 2 for me .......

For me was a kind of Natasha Gregson Wagner ir Bryce Fallas Howard. Yep I know she itsnt the daughter of Big Jack despite wrong publicity in the late 90s

A two-times nominee but I think she qualifies here... Shirley Knight who was Paul Newman's love interest in Sweet Bird of Youth, and had an endearing supporting presence in As Good As It Gets (nominated for a Satellite for it, which I think is funny). She's very good in The Rain People too. (I looked up again and she had won several Emmys and was part of the Actors studio. Guess she wasn't that under-appreciated after all lol... still, a shutout is a shutout.)

Love her - The Rain People is a near great movie - way ahead of its time as a feminsit picture in a way - and her performance is shattering. There's a lot in that movie that Coppola then adds to later - including Godfather Part 3, Rumble Fish - it informs much of his work since he wrote it. Knight is also unbelievably big and vivid in the 55 minute film Dutchman (1966) - one of the great plays adapted to a short movie here - all about race and tensions - racial and otherwise (and many other things too) - opposite Al Freeman Jr........who gets a spectacular speech in this movie Whole film is below - a kind of a must watch to set up the kind of free and looser acting that came about in the US in the late 60s, early 70s:

Joanna Shimkus, "doubly pictured" below with Sidney Poitier (RIP Legend) in the movie The Lost Man. They met on this movie, fell in love and got married until his last day. Joanna Shimkus had a really brief film's career, she started to get famous in France in the late 60's when she co-starred with Lino Ventura and Alain Delon in Les Aventuriers and Michel Piccoli in L'Invitée, no less. Her beauty and natural charm illuminated the screen, at the same time she tried to have an international career and she met Sidney Poitier and quickly after she stopped her career. My condolences to you, Joanna.
