In regard to Meryl Streep - sometimes she deserves it, sometimes she doesn't. But for me personally, her performance is very rarely the least of the nominees, and even if I wouldn't have nominated her myself, I always enjoy her nominated work ('The French Lieutenant's Woman' being the one exception). Just my $0.02.

Oh wait. The ultimate: Terms of Endearment for Sound. Its nomination for Art Decoration was weird too, and this is coming from someone who liked the film. The 1978 Art Decoraration lineup is weird too with films like Heaven Can Wait, California Suite, and Interiors getting in over better looking films like Death on the Nile and Superman.

Vikander was lazy because not only was it category fraud, she had a clear better performance in Ex Machina but since The Danish Girl was about transgenderism then of course the 'cause du jour' made the decision. I also forgot Eddie Redmayne was also a very lazy nomination. As for Cranston he's a respected actor everyone likes and that's why he was nominated.

Vikander : category fraud for sure but she was still the heart + soul of that rather uneven film . She was the the best thing about it .That being said , she should have been nominated for Ex Machina instead. Cranston : brilliant performance all around ; he played that character with so much passion , energy and wit . He was the driving force of that film. And AVATAR was epic ! The concept was absolutely fascinating .Cameron deserved high praise for this spectacular work.

Zeb31 - What did you think of Close's nomination for 'Albert Nobbs' in 2011? Like I said, I don't remember much from the film at all, but I do recall having no problem with Close's nod. It's very good work, if not quite top 5 of the year, and McTeer was even better.
