It needs to do at least $400M worldwide to be termed as hit.

That's a good number. If you want to see Blade Runner 2049, you have to see it in the theatre.

Yikes, that's bad for Blade Runner. Either WOM must be poor among the general public, or there was a fanboy rush because that's a poor increase from the midnight numbers. Either way it could miss 100m, which is just sad. deadline.com/2017/10/ryan-gosling-blade-runner-2049-harrison-ford-opening-weekend-box-office-1202183063/1.) Various websites estimated it in the range of $45M-$50M. $32M is a disappointing number. Damn!

Unfortunately, not surprising. I purchased my tickets ahead of time after the projected box office skyrocketed, and then was underwhelmed to find maybe twenty or twenty-five people total in my theater last night. Really hope this doesn't do too much damage to its awards chances, but it's certainly not helping.

I don't see how anyone is surprised. Did anybody really expect a movie like this to be a hit with general audiences, especially with that budget?

I don't see how anyone is surprised. Did anybody really expect a movie like this to be a hit with general audiences, especially with that budget? Ticket sales suggested it could do better. Turns out the midnight number was just frontloaded. It's a poor poor number.

Do you think it can have legs like Edge of Tomorrow?

Eh, disappointing but not surprising. Problem is the budget. How many 2 hour 45 min rated R films make that much?
Watchman 55 The Revenant 39 Inglourious Basterds 38 Wolf of Wall Street 18
Most comparable (though PG-13) might be Interstellar at 47.
Mad Max made 45 but that was a lean 2 hours. I'm sure they were hoping for something closer to this, but runtime does matter for avg moviegoers.
Revenant, Basterds, and Wolf had nice legs though, so we'll see what happens.

Really hope this doesn't do too much damage to its awards chances, but it's certainly not helping. I went on Thursday night and there were only ten other people there. I was surprised.

Loved this film to death and I wish more people see this. But Honestly, this may be a good thing in the long run. We won't get a couple of overcooked sequels (at least right away)

Do you think it can have legs like Edge of Tomorrow? Unfortunately it doesn't look good in that regard. A 3X multiplier seems out of the question anyway.

I have to agree with robbstark on this. I'm actually somewhat surprised it made it over $30m.

The original was always more of a favorite to cinefiles than general audiences. It's quite slow paced and a lot of people have called it boring. I'm not sure why they thought a nearly 3 hour long sequel was a good idea
