Great decision by the comitee in my opinion, probably the best since Orhan Pamuk in 2006. (Probably because I haven't ready anything from every laureate since then). Love The Remains of the Day and The Buried Giant. Though When We Were Orphans was good not great. Dying to read The Unconsoled and An Artist of the Floating World.

Nice. At last, a choice that doesn't feel random. The Reimains of the Day is a masterpiece.
This just reminded me of how badly I want to read Never Let Me Go.

Yeah, The Remains of the Day is definitely a must read for every bibliophile. Masterpiece, as you said. Funny enough Never Let Me Go is the one of his books I'm the least interested in. Maybe because I didn't like the film, though I'm confident that the book is much better.

I'm still holding out hope that McCarthy and Pynchon will win theirs before it's too late, but Ishiguro is a fine choice.

Only one I read was Artist of the Floating World, which I liked a lot. Much less controversial than the last time round

My mom told me about this tonight. Told me that the Japanese guy I like so much won the Nobel. I was thinking "How would Hayao Miyazaki or Gen Urobuchi win a Nobel prize?" Then I figured out that it must have been my favorite living novelist. Well deserved. The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go are masterpieces, with Nocturnes, The Buried Giant and An Artist of the Floating World among the best books of recent times. Sure, When We Were Orphans and The Unconsoled were both so mediocre that I couldn't finish them, but everyone writes a few duds. The important thing is that he has written more powerful novels than anyone alive today.

Oh, and is anyone else familiar with his songwriting work? I'm a HUGE fan of jazz singer Stacey Kent, and he's written lyrics for her. Many of my favorite Kent songs include his work:
