Was hoping Denis will do it. Bummer. That said Gadot isn't that bad of a choice and there has been a dearth of good historical epics these days. Bring it on.

Oh thank God. I saw this thread bumped and was terrified that Denis is ditching the Dune sequel and doing Cleopatra instead. What a relief!

I actually prefer this matchup, to be honest. Villeneuve would obviously make a sumptuously shot epic (especially if he got Deakins back on board), but I'm more excited for Jenkins to flex in a film shot in antiquity (Wonder Woman feels like a test run for something like this), and Gadot is a fine choice for the part.
Question is, who do we want for Caesar and Mark Antony?

Mark Strong/Stephen Dillane for Caesar. James Purefoy for Antony... okay okay, I know that won't happen again. Matt Smith.

Gadot is genius casting but Villeneuve leaving the project makes it much less interesting.

I could see Robert Pattinson as either Anthony or as Octavian/Gaius/Augustus.

FYI: This is a different project to the Denis one.
Now the Denis one most likely still won't happen but just thought I would mention it.

I could see Robert Pattinson as either Anthony or as Octavian/Gaius/Augustus. If he plays it like he played the Dauphin in The King, except with an over-the-top Italian accent, I AM IN.

I would only interested in Villeneuve's one of those two. I rather recently rewatched the Mankiewicz film of 1963 and thought it wasted potential quite a bit.

Uhmmm, this was not a good response. They never learn. From Ridley Scott with his tone deaf responses to casting on Exodus: Gods And Kings to Scarlett Johansson's career history of tone deafness in casting (so infamous now that her husband Colin Jost was forced on Saturday Night Live last week to make a joke about her being cast as Sammy Davis Jr in a biopic ), I'm astonished that these millionaire Hollywood types don't sit down with PR management teams to discuss how to respond to these subjects without sounding entitled or tone deaf to those concerns.

She should have just stayed silent. I also have zero issue with her casting.

Well, she needed a bookend with that Imagine sing-a-long video she orchestrated earlier this year.

I'm fine with her being cast. Couldn't she just stay silent?

Oh dear, she really didn't need to comment. I actually have little problem with her casting, even if I do kinda question it. Also I find it ironic that Hollywood has often and still shyes away from casting darker skinned actors in big roles in these epics, when they were always like the superhero movies of their day. Sure big stars fill seats, but to audiences it was more about the spectacle and big imagery on the screen then anything else.

I just can't get over "she wasn't there" I like to think that Gal Gadot poked her head in a random building in Macedonia for five seconds, then said, "Nope. Woe is me, but I guess I'll have to make the ultimate sacrifice and take this incredibly monumental and iconic historical character for myself."

Does anyone think that Beyoncé should have been cast? Her Cleopatra promotional material from Dreamgirls was STUNNING.

She also portrayed her in Austin Powers. Beyoncé was BORN for this role.

Fuck, and here I thought you couldn't make a worse choice for Cleopatra than Gadot. Zendaya? Lol!

there's a rumour that Lena Dunham is gonna play the title role Like that's ever going to happen. Lena Dunham is likelier to play Julius Caesar than Cleopatra. No Lena dropped because of scheduling. She will be in Mata Hari in the tittle role.- Phoebe Waller-Bridge is in talks to star and co-write the film.-
