I think the fact that it's taken forever is gonna make people curious. Even though usually long gaps can work against sequels, I think Avatar has the technical innovation thing on its side to make everybody wonder wtf's going on. People like to say nobody discusses Avatar, which is sort of true but the sequel news always makes headlines. We love to laugh at it but I think we're also all kinda craning our necks to get a look at this thing.
I'm also anticipating it purely on the basis of it being a new James Cameron film, his first in 13 years. I don't know how I'll feel by 3,4,5 - it can easily become a Malick thing where the ~mystery~ fades once they're cranking out every other year - but Avatar 2 is definitely an event movie.

If this thread wasn't bumped every so often, I'd have forgotten completely about its existence the first one's as well.

The Way of Water sounds like the title of a Terrence Malick movie.

The Way of Water sounds like the title of a Terrence Malick movie. Just wait for part3: The Thin Blue Tail.

I'm not even a huge fan of the first film, but I've grown so fucking sick and tired of the incessant "no one even remembers Avatar anymore" shit that at this point I am unequivocally and enthusiastically rooting for Jimmy C to succeed.

Yeah, people keep repeating that shit. Like okay? Do we remember a third of these MCU movies? New generations gonna have to deal with Cameron once again. They should be watching True Lies and Aliens and T2 instead of tiktoks. Understand who you're slandering.

It is definitely true, but I think it’s interesting. It came and went kinda quick and managed to become one of the biggest movies of all time during that time. That it doesn’t have the clout that these Marvel movies have, the meme-ability, pop culture mania, etc. works in Avatar’s favor imo bc the story of Avatar is a rejection of the corporate monstrosity that is Marvel. Avatar is explicitly pro-environmentalism, anti-colonization, critical of the military, and rejects the American exceptionalism garbage. Marvel is the 180 of it and gets input from the US national security apparatus The difference between the two is why Marvel is EVERYWHERE and promoted while Avatar is kinda pushed aside despite its phenomenal success. It shows how out of touch corporate entertainment is and it’s also not in their interest to lean into a movie like Avatar the way they lean into Marvel movies In the long run, Avatar will continue to age well and Marvel won’t

The trailer in IMAX is mind-blowing.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' visuals were flavorless in comparison.
Trailer (Not recommended if you can wait for its official release)

"This family... is our fortress."
Somewhere, Vin Diesel just got simultaneously erect and litigious.

This was genuinely breathtaking on a big screen. Cameron is back, baby!

Credit where’s its due. It does look really good. Especially on the big screen.
The thing is, however, the original already owed much of its strength to the spectacle. This time out, the spectacle can only carry it so far, because the same trick won’t work twice. We’ll wait and see if there’s a strong story to push it further.

I'm sure the film will be met with much derision but I'm hyped as fuck. Cameron's first in 13 years, holy shit. A bit hard to believe that it's actually happening tbh

Marvel and Spielberg sink. And for the doubters, yeah do your galaxy brain move and doubt the dude who brought you Terminator 2 and Aliens

Cameron's hypnotism must not work on me because that looked pretty bland to me.

Are you unfamiliar with a large percentage of sequels? A good sequel, let me rephrase xD EDIT: Something that Cameron has managed to do in the past, because even Aliens and T2 aren’t just straight rehashes of the original film. But I don’t know. I get the feeling with Avatar, he may be pushing the technology more than he pushes the story. And I say that as somebody who loves Avatar, despite the fact that as a story, it is incredibly mediocre
