Very interesting results this month, with 4 top contenders within a 5-vote distance, and even though they're the same 4 as last month, The Papers loses its easy #1 position (losing 6 votes) again in favor of Dunkirk (gaining 5 votes), surely thanks to its excellent reviews and box office. Last Flag Flying adds another 3 people to its supporters, whereas Call Me by Your Name increases its count by 7, probably thanks to its lovely trailer and maybe its inclusion in the NYFF lineup. Considering La La Land was our frontrunner in August last year and only one person saw Moonlight coming, one should think our BP winner will come out of those 4 films... unless another one mentioned below becomes a dark horse. The difference is that all of them, with more or less the same points as last month, have a relatively high profile. The exception might be The Death of Stalin, although the great response to its new trailer didn't translate into more votes here. Or maybe the winner will be one of the contenders we've dropped this month: Darkest Hour, Detroit, The Florida Project, Suburbicon or Submergence. These seem unlikely though, as the race becomes clearer with the festival announcements and other related news, and so we narrow down our list to the following, adding MAR and OB's votes to a total of 61, 4 more than July's:
1. Dunkirk - 14 votes 2. The Papers - 13 votes 3. Last Flag Flying - 11 votes 4. Call Me by Your Name - 10 votes 5. Blade Runner 2049 - 2 votes 5. Downsizing - 2 votes 5. Get Out - 2 votes 5. Phantom Thread - 2 votes 9. The Death of Stalin - 1 vote 9. Detroit - 1 vote 9. Mother! - 1 vote 9. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - 1 vote 9. Wonderstruck - 1 vote
Total: 61 votes

The thing about this year so far is that there isn't a really surefire competitor this year. Dunkirk might peak too early, The Papers is shrouded in secrecy, Call Me By Your Name is only coming a year after Moonlight which might dampen its chances, and Last Flag Flying sounds up Oscar's alley but not much is known (at least by me). It's an enigma.
