Don't think I spotted a thread about this one yet.
After binge-watching season 1 over the course of a week, I dug into the first 3 episodes of the second season and it really does not disappoint. I can feel the vague similarities with Girls, and I know it's unfair to compare the two since the latter had six seasons to fall apart, run out of steam, etc. but the writing on Insecure thus far feels smarter, pithier and a hell of a lot less self-indulgent. I love how the characters call each other out on shit that most viewers wouldn't be able to overlook (e.g., Issa and Molly's back and forth at the fundraising event, and Tasha putting Lawrence on blast at the end of last week's episode). Issa is indeed flawed and makes poor choices on a semi-regular basis (all 3 main characters do, refreshingly) however Rae does a fantastic job playing out these unsavory aspects in a straightforward manner without compromising the quippy humor of the writing. Some of the secondary characters do feel overly broad sometimes (Kelli, Tiffany, most of Issa's coworkers), but this is just a minor quibble.
Anyways, thoughts?

I basically agree with everything you've said. So far, I think season 2 has been even better than the first. It's refreshing to see this real small-scale show about normal people with normal stakes, while still keeping it interesting by making the characters flawed and multi-dimensional. I do agree that some of the secondary characters aren't great, but I hope that as the show goes on (especially since it's already been renewed for season 3), they'll be given more depth.
