Subject matter maybe?
It's a great performance though and I think it'll stay as my win once I'm done with all the films from that year I plan on watching.

The movie didn't do great awards-wise when it came out (just got a screenplay nom) so it shouldn't be a surprise. He also wasn't a star yet. Pink Panther/Strangelove being released within a short period of time was his breakout.
Personally I think it's the best movie of that year (and it was a pretty good one) but the subject matter probably held it back.

I'm not sure why he didn't, but it is indeed an incredible performance, and one of my favorites from any Kubrick film. He really would've deserved recognition.

Many critics hated the movie at the time. The New York reviews were filled with scorn. Pauline Kael, who was in San Francisco at the time, said that her rave review was a salvage job on a film she loved.

I can understand why the critics hated it. In order to enjoy it (the performances and the film itself), I had to disconnect from my feelings regarding the novel, because on a first watch I almost felt that Nabokov was mocking his own work. I get that they had to make it lighter and funnier because of the subject matter, otherwise the film would have probably been banned, but they could have waited a few more years... Even Kubrick himself later admitted that he was not particularly proud of the film.
I recently found out that this is one of David Lynch's favorite films. No wonder, considering how dark and bizarre the humour in some of his films/tv episodes can be. Maybe the Audrey Horne character from Twin Peaks was a homage to Lolita?
