Fucking hell A great writer, playwright and actor. The Paris, Texas screenplay was one of the greatest gifts he offered to the world of Cinema, a fantastic adaptation.

He wrote a lot of great stuff but I will go to the grave saying out of Paris, Texas, True West etc. the purest thing he ever wrote is the extended monologue Killer's Head a brilliant stunt of writing that made Richard Gere a star and would have made an actual good actor a legend That formed a connection that in a way lead to Days Of Heaven too where of course he's very memorable Very gifted guy RIP

Shepard was a good actor & superb playwriter. He's great in The Right Stuff among others (a cool Chuck Yeagar). He was also quite good recently in a part in Mud. His first major role was also as the farmer in Days of Heaven as well, which he was quite effective in as well. RIP!

An absolute legend in every arena. The guy was a force in front of the camera, but he was a true gem on the page. Shame he had to go out that way.

Damn. I was always a fan of him as an actor, but somehow never realized that he co-wrote Paris, Texas, one of the best screenplays ever. Really talented guy. Rest in peace.

I had no idea he had ALS. He's stayed so active in the last few years that I didn't even consider any health problems. He will certainly be missed.

Terrible news. Obviously a legendary career and I loved him somewhat recently in Bloodline and Cold in July as well.

Now that hit me. Still had to verify it, cause I thought this was maybe a joke. He didn't have the great lead ones, but he was one of the actors who added something highly positive to every film he was in. Love his performances in "The Right Stuff" and "Don't Come Knocking". Nominate him for both. Great actor. It's sad, he won't be longer around and also a sad way of dying.
RIP Sam

I remember seeing that and thinking that was kind of a dick move by the interviewer because it was obviously very fresh and there was a very real chance that McConaughey wouldn't have heard about it. At least let it be out there in the ether for a week or so and allow someone who actually knew the man to process his loss.

Just an earnest moment accidently captured by camera.
