Good reviews + good marketing really helped. That and WOM is also clearly very good. Quite impressive. And lets be honest, Nolan's name does help at least somewhat. Yes somehow, though the marketing deserves a lot of prop. This film success is gonna help Nolan though, I think he can now get a film about his bumhole greenlit for 150m.

Nolan's name is the major factor.. good reviews and WOM are only added bonus. War for the Apes should have done more if we take reviews into consideration but it didn't, why? No brand name. Nolan is the draw. Period!

Yeah but Dunkirk is almost a silent-experimental war film and it did pretty good at the BO. The answer is Nolan.

It is now the highest grossing WW2 film of all time. Adjusted for inflation, Saving Private Ryan made more than $400 million in the U.S. alone. Still, for the type of film Dunkirk is, its box office is quite an achievement.

And Nolan is the first director to have 4 $500m ww box office hits that aren't all part of the same franchise. Amazing, really.

I thought it being a war movie would counteract the appeal of Nolan, but nope, dude still drew in the crowds. The people I watched it with were only there for Nolan. I was there for Cillian Murphy lol
