1700s Venice. If they were having parties like that with those Venetian style costumes at that time, I want in.
2nd place Lepanto battle (world media doesn't talk about this battle much).... also Venice. 3rd place maybe the Marco Polo era Venice. There's a trend here.

The Sindona banking scandal is a great, complex story that people have only a cursory awareness of. Coppola used some of it as the Vatican plot of Godfather Part III but the real story is actually better and richer and twists in ways he couldn't really show. Read the wikipedia entry and tell me that this isn't a classic gangster film AND a classic financial ruin film rolled into one. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michele_Sindona

There were some attempts at telling the story in few Italian movies, documentaries and miniseries already Un eroe borghese, directed by Michele Placido (1995) I banchieri di Dio - Il caso Calvi, by Giuseppe Ferrara (2002) Enzo Biagi - C'era una volta: Michele Sindona, by Sarah Nicora - Documentary (2010) Qualunque cosa succeda, directed by Alberto Negrin - tv Miniseries (2014)

@ cherry68 -
Are we sure that we don't know what happened yet at least to shape a story to do it justice 40 years later? While I haven't seen the films you listed I think there is a pretty clear record of events in books I've read. I just assumed the complexities of the case make it a hard story to tell coherently though - I mean there's a lot going there so you'd have to keep it straight and clear.

I just realized I'm ancient enough to remember a 40 yo story. Well, having the two main men (Sindona and Calvi) involved in this case killed in mysterious circumstances doesn't help in clarifying the facts. Even Licio Gelli is dead now. I'm pretty sure international audience might be interested, I'm only saying that Italians already heard about this story many times. And we don't know who was behind it yet.

The battle of Lepanto, even if it might be a good epic movie. 500 battleships involved, and a coalition of many different countries.

The Coe/Cram/Ovett British middle distance rivalry of the 1980's. So many records and more than a few Olympic medals between them.
