Yay. If Cagney had to win one, this was the most appropriate role. It showcased his vaudevillian roots and cemented him as a multi-dimensional actor rather than a tough guy he's usually known for.

But James Cagney won his Oscar for Yankee Doodle Dandy the year that Humphrey Bogart was not nominated (Bogart was nominated the following year for Casablanca) _Oscar 1942 for Best Actor in Leading Role: James Cagney - Yankee Doodle Dandy Ronald Colman - Random Harvest Gary Cooper - The Pride of the Yankees Walter Pigdeon - Mrs. Miniver Monty Woolley - The Pied Piper _Oscar 1943 for Best Actor in Leading Role: Humphrey Bogart - Casablanca Gary Cooper - For Whom the Bell Tolls Paul Lukas - Watch on the Rhine Walter Pidgeon - Madame Curie Mickey Rooney - The Human Comedy

Cagney is terrific, I actually don't mind his win even if Bogart probably deserved to win overall. Humphrey Bogart was not nominated for Casablanca the year that James Cagney won. Bogart was nominated the following year when Paul Lukas won for his performance on Watch on the Rhine.

Probably because Casablanca had its premiere in 1942, but didn't get released in most cinemas in 1943. That's probably where the confusion comes from.

Nay. However, he showed his incredible versatility that he possessed and was able to carry over into any role he took on.

Yes, indeed. A wonderful win. He gave the second best male performance of 1942, but I am not going to quibble.
