Before she married Jean Sorel, Anna Maria Ferrero was in a ten year relationship with Gassman (Shelley Winters physically attacked her at one point...) and it's my understanding that it was the two of them who made Shakespeare popular in Italy. Definitely interested in exploring his work. Any recommendations for me? My choices, alphabetically... Dirk Bogarde Jeff Bridges Montgomery Clift Alain Delon Gene Kelly Burt Lancaster Jack Lemmon Marcello Mastroianni Paul Newman Jean Sorel

Definitely interested in exploring his work. Any recommendations for me? Not sure if you can find his movies with subtitles, but Profumo di donna (scent of a woman) Il sorpasso (the easy life) La grande guerra (the great War) Riso amaro (bitter rice) Audace colpo dei soliti ignoti (hold up a la milaneise) There are many others, but these could give a good sample.

Most of the time for acting favorite and best interchange with me closely - not like filmmakers for example - but I like favorite more because I don't have to agonize over how "great" Day-Lewis or Oldman or Clift and Cazale are and where they would be on the list. There is no greater example of that disconnect though than Harvey Keitel. I don't know how "great" he is but I love him - he's my best performance of the 90s or close to it and he's the best actor of the 90s too despite never being close in another decade. So I must think he's pretty great but on our GOAT lists where I was voting "best" I ranked him wayyyyyyy higher than actors I know are better. He's an odd duck..... ***************************************************************************************************************** No order : Brando De Niro Nicholson Finney Pacino Keitel Olivier PSH Dustin Hoffman (67-88 only) Depardieu
Huppert Streep Keaton Judy Davis Adjani Mirren Redgrave Rowlands Burstyn
? I really don't want to put a 10th over Adèle Haenel but it's too soon right? I don't even know where to start with Adele Haenel. Like legit no idea..........

This is a reply I gave to my main Rohmer-man JangoB a while back that may help you out with her and for bob-coppola who was interested at one time. She also just starred in 2 big Cannes films one of which is considered her best now - I haven't seen them Deerskin (a more minor film but apparently good) and a big one Portrait of a Lady on Fire. ******************************************************************************************************************** Well..................she's a very strange bird because I rank her so highly for the totality of her work not just individual performances. What is so stunning about her, is I've never seen her miscast at and she's done a lot across a ton of varied thematic work - she's in a current movie The Trouble With You - a straight comedy that she is positively bewitching in and much better than the film which she always is - that applies to almost everything she does.
You can't even believe that this girl is the same person from film to film. She's in heavy drama for the Dardennes - she has 2 Caesars already - one for a romantic comedy Love at First Fight that could not be more different - at 29 (I think) she's starred in period drama pieces, zany or farce comedies, sophisticated modern comedies, ensemble drama pieces that she integrates herself into, incredibly daring and provocative modern drama stuff (BPM, as a young girl, Water Lillies, Nocturama) - she can carry your film or be in your ensemble .......... it's somewhat insane - there's nothing she has been cast in the she has failed at that I have seen even if the role is negligible she makes a mark...........what's more than that is her style is beyond effortless - you never see her force any actor moments.
She's the modern Huppert imo.........if they were to make a film together the screen may literally catch fire from their collective intelligence, wit, and talent.

I think your Huppert comparison is the best way to describe Haenel to someone who's never seen her act. The first two times I saw her were on 120 BPM - in which she was a small part of an ensemble - and The Unknown Girl - where she was the headliner. Those were two completely different types of roles, but had one thing in common: her total lack of vanity when acting. I can't really explain, but like Huppert, Haenel strikes me as someone who's very much suited to french cinema, someone who's more interested in portraying people than types. It's very telling that she hasn't tried to swim across the pond yet.

Hopefully more regularly? Fascinating lists - especially the Patric addition who at his best was much like Brando. I did a "profile" of Tim Curry in the Best Actor Across Film/TV/Stage thread that I'm sure didn't do him justice - check it out. And just wanna recommend a great little Shelley Duvall perf that I watched sort of recently and I don't think anybody has seen unless you have maybe? only 45min quite enjoyable and streamin' on Prime - Bernice Bobs Her Hair ('76)
