Uh, Mythic Quest made me cry. I thought this was a comedy? That episode with Abraham and Hurt... Their one-off/flashback episodes are such standouts. Just watched that episode last night. Great stuff.

The Sopranos Season 1. My wife has never the show so I’m doing a full rewatch with her.

Re-watched the final episode of Big Little Lies S1. Honestly one of the most well-constructed episodes of television I've seen - the way all narrative threads are thrown together in one frenzy of dramatic twists and cathartic resolutions is a marvel to behold. Been slowly re-watching the first season with my sister, and it really was phenonmenal television all-round. I remember enjoying S2 a fair bit, but I do wish they'd left it here.

Three episodes into Series 2 of This Way Up. Aisling Bea is still a goddess and I love the deftness this series has exhibited thus far, but I feel like this is Sharon Horgan's season to shine and she is crushing it.

Ted Lasso (S2, E2) and Servant (S1, E10). Both shows are really great. Servant is vastly underrated due to being a product of AppleTV+. All of the characters are so well developed and the creepiness increases for each episode.

The Sopranos, S3 E6 "University"This episode is not as top drawer as its reputation would suggest, as the Meadow / Noah / Caitlin stuff drags it down, but it does somewhat link to the main theme of the episode, so it's forgivable I guess. Over all, it is good that the show dealt with just how much the women in this world are disposable commodities to the shit bird gangsters. I watched this too recently. If you didn't see the parallel between Caitlin and Tracee.....

The City (1977) Robert Forster earlier in the decade had two title-character shows that were cancelled early (Banyon, Nakia), and here was a good-looking pilot for NBC that they didn't pick up but released as a TV Movie. Produced by ace Quinn Martin who had several shows hit syndication - The Fugitive, Streets of San Francisco etc. San Fran was in its last year and he wanted another cop duo around Cali - Forster as the wearier vet and Don Johnson as the by-the-book. It's pretty good, with guest-criminal Mark Hamill on the run sweatily like some mutant, spiraling due to a psychotic hatred towards country music. (Not kidding!) It was the last thing Americans might've seen him in before meeting Luke Skywalker four months later. I would've watched more eps for Forster alone who has awesome charm here - "I never stole nothin I couldn't spell." What a baffling mess of a career, but a lot of underrated work....

Legend of the Galactic Heroes episode 1 I had heard about this being the sort of lost grail of anime, with many putting it on a pedestal with Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Well, if the first episode is any indication: This is basically The Killer Angels IN SPAAAAAAACE!!! Loads upon loads upon loads of characters, focusing so far on two opposing soldiers: Reinhard, leading an imperial force that doesn't trust him because he is the brother of the Kaiser's wife(?) - and Yang, an Alliance strategist that offers courses of action that his superiors don't agree with. Reinhard must win the respect of his troops, and Yang must win the respect of his superiors. That's the basic gist of the narrative at the moment, but every side character and their mother has been given a name and a viewpoint of how to conduct their portion of the war, from fighter pilots to admirals to civilians watching the results unfold. Some of them only have a line or two, but the groundwork has been laid for the roles they will play later on. I'm excited. I haven't seen a war story so devoted to how characters plan battles outside of The Killer Angels. If this show can keep my attention for another... ONE HUNDRED NINE EPISODES!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?Well... I do like it so far. Eh....heh....

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars (1988)
After watching the very confusing (but still clearly awesome) first episode of LotGH, I discovered that this hour long movie came first, as a pilot/proof of concept. It is much easier to follow, introducing the characters in a much more relaxed fashion... and the first episode calls back to the events of this movie A LOT, so I definitely should have watched this first.
It is predictably very much my shit. Lots of planning and countering and planning and improvisation. It's like watching an hour long chess match. But it also takes time to show how the grunts see the war, showing a much more expansive world outside of the bubble of officers and leaders. Seeing the Alliance soldiers jokingly place bets on who will win the battle (almost everyone bets on the enemy) or the Imperial soldiers musing that the upcoming battle has already been named - do the leaders already have the winners and losers planned too? - gives so much more weight to the world.
And come on, this has a FIFTEEN MINUTE SPACE BATTLE SET TO RAVEL'S BOLERO. There is no way that I wouldn't love this.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes S1 E7: The Capture of Iserlohn Fortress
I love Star Wars, but it would have been even cooler if it was about a plot by the rebels to Trojan Horse the Death Star and take over the most powerful weapon in the galaxy. This is not just an intense episode, but remarkably funny as well. "Don't worry, their garrison will have little more than fifty men" the Alliance commander tells his commando team of... I think seven? The laughing shrug of the one guy upon hearing that was the first time this show really demonstrated a sense of humor, and it isn't the only piece of comedy in this episode.

No thread for The Good Fight, and I don't watch it, but needed to post...... Elaine May (89y/o) has been guesting as Ruth Bader Ginsberg the last few eps. And it's only like her eighth narrative perf ever so a big deal. flasuss Tommen_Saperstein - who've posted about the show in here, anyone caught up? Is it pretty much a cameo or decent size part?

Hacks E1-6 Alright and sort of enjoyable so far, mainly for Jean Smart who gets a great role for her as an aging ultra rich comedian who both chases and hates her monotonous career.... definitely inspired in ways by Joan Rivers.... from the trailers I feared it might be like a show on Jane Lynch's annoying Sophie Lennon from Mrs Maisel, but it isn't cartoony... it reminds me of Danny Collins in its tone and themes, and their opening shots are pretty much the same. Not a fan of the young lead they casted.... and the McDonald's fries product placement was maddening bc their fries are not that good! Watched this over the last few days and loved it. Some incredible laugh out loud moments balanced well with the heavy stuff. We don't deserve Jean Smart.

Out of the Blue (1995) Ep1-3. BBC's apparent answer to Homicide: Life On The Street. Excellent so far.... Great cast, disturbing cases, very fast-paced. Anybody ever see this? Only 12 eps - it was cancelled early on. Only 40 votes on IMDb.

Slightly drawn out and hampered by some cheesy flashbacks and iffy makeup... but overall this was mostly well done and pretty chilling. Lots of wince-inducing moments... and an ending that is equal parts satisfying and unsettling. Joshua Jackson is an eerie enigma as Duntsch, but this was magic whenever Baldwin and Slater shared the screen. One of my favorite acting duos in recent memory. Loved Slater especially... perfect blend of hilarious and charismatic while never losing sight of the passion for his crusade.

Mattsby re: The Good Fight, I had to give up in S3. I'm pretty sure you would not like it. Tackles a lot of zeitgeisty political topics in shallow, one-episode ways where everything is neatly tied up by the ending. S1 was actually really good but after that it lacks a strong narrative thru-line and its political themes are at odds with the preciousness and quirkiness of its court scenes. Has some wonderful cameos (Jane Lynch and John Cameron Mitchell are AMAZING) but as a whole it's pretty lightweight. may catch up someday, and if I ever do I'll let you know about May

How I Met Your Mother- Took me a couple of seasons to fully get into it and then i had some quality fun time with these fellows for 3-4 more seasons and then it totally derails. It rehashes things, frequently flashes to back and forward and the characters are inconsistent. As fun as this was there aren't many memorable episodes down the line. Props to the show for the guts it showed with that ending btw. It really makes sense for it to be Robin in the end and not the mother who is hardly in it but the show is titled How I Met Your Mother. So i guess the ending might have been hard to digest for some fans.

Feel Good season 2 ep 3first ep was a little rough but it quickly picked up again in eps 2 and 3 because what holds this whole beautiful messy story together is the off-the-charts chemistry between Mae and George. When they're together and acting off each other, the show is some of the best on TV, certainly on Netflix. Ep. 3 further developments the trauma angle (what did Scott do to Mae all those years ago?) while further exploring how Mae's trauma impacts this relationship dynamic, like how she uses sex as a coping/escape mechanism--taken to its gross extremes in one hilarious hospital scene. Hilarious deadpan comedy meets hard-hitting examination of trauma and addiction meets adorable queer love story. There's really nothing not to like. I can't believe I only have three short eps left and then it's over for good. I love these two so much.

Hard to watch at times... and could've balanced the four protagonists a little bit more smoothly... but still pretty well done. Interesting subject matter made fascinating by showing it from four very different angles. Sofie's mental deterioration, Cam's dehumanization, Ameer going to hell and back and still having to fight for freedom... and Clare trying to get paperwork done in a timely fashion (just kidding). Also made me imagine a version of this set in a US detention center... now that would be an absolute horror show. Strahovski, Bazzi, and Keddie are great... Courtney was pretty good. And even though she co-created it, I have no clue why Cate Blanchett is even in this. Maybe 20 minutes of screentime through six episodes and only really given anything to do in the first 10.

been revisiting a bunch of The Twilight Zone, some latest seen: S1.7 The Lonely “Why’d they turn you into a lie?” w a very good Jack Warden, quite sad Chinatown-esque ending! S2.7 Nick of Time or iced coffees at the sorcerous booth, w William Shatner. How we might become suddenly pinched by superstition. S2.8 The Lateness of the Hour, one of 6eps shot on tape to cut budget costs. “You manufactured me” - ridiculous, predictable ep, but campy fun. S2.28 Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up? Background sign says, “I Have Not Been Told is no excuse. Know by thinking- observing- studying.” Snowy diner mystery where anyone may or may not be nonhuman, fun for a bit, flopped by silly ending.

The Twilight Zone: Midnight Sun (1961) S3E10. Never seen before, reminded me of The World The Flesh and The Devil (1959) and, partially, Bergman. This could be remade with any actors, at any time, and it'd work. There are some really interesting, near-surreal imagery here - melting paint, mercury bursting, and a brilliant cut where the actress exhales and it almost looks like the screen is fogging but it's a dissolve to the simmering sun she can't escape. Can't recall seeing Lois Nettleton before, but she's great here... also, The Twilight Zone: Wordplay (1985) S1E2. I've been all over the original show but dipped into the reboot for this Wes Craven one, a clever and deliberately tongue-tied ep on our fear of obsoletion... And you can read into his language "condition" at least three different ways. Annie Potts quite good as the fatigued wife .

Binged 2 Netflix mini series that sounded decent but both ended up falling on their faces in the end.
Clickbait This started out promising and had potential but just fell apart in the 2nd half. I felt like I was watching some Lifetime channel bullshit.
Behind Her Eyes Again, started out promising and I was intrigued by the premise (never even heard of any of the actors but they did a good job) until the laughably stupid absurd finale. ugh
