I'm caught up and am really enjoying it. Gyllenhaal's subplot is by far the most interesting to me, but I'm curious to see where all the characters go from here.

Episode 3 was very good stuff again. We're starting to see more plot strings develop and more characters interacting, but it remains and excellent slow burner. A lesser team of people would have already had Eileen making pornos. I'm pleased they are taking their time with this, as not everything has to happen with immediacy. I'm also pleased this is a weekly show and it wasn't 8 episodes thrown at me at the same time by Netflix. As much as I love the sometimes immediacy of television content these days, it is important to keep ones self trained in the art of watching a television show week in week out. I was happy to let those Game of Thrones leaks pass me by.
One question though, is it just me or are others finding that a lot of the cast are close to inaudible at times? I put the subtitles on last night as I was tired of straining to make out what was said a lot of the time.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is MURDERING it so far. I think this tops anything she's done on the big screen, and that's saying a bunch.

I think she's the standout amongst the lesser-knowns, though I slightly prefer Levieva if we're keeping it to the non-Gyllenhaal girls.

So could Franco contend for best actor?. His work as Vincent is the most I've liked him in anything for a good 10 years or so. The Frankie stuff is more latter day Franco, but not bad enough/large enough a part to detract much.

So could Franco contend for best actor?. It's possible, and I do agree with ibbi that the Vincent stuff is perhaps the best Franco has been in a very long time (although I may still prefer 11/22/63 by a smidge), but I don't really care too much about his Frankie character and I do think that both are the least interesting characters on the show. But I think if anyone gets in, it'll be Gyllenhaal.

After 4 episodes, I’m really loving this. Wonderful successor to The Wire (it’s grest seeing actors from The Wire pop up) but with enough originality to stand on its own and not rely on nostalgia for The Wire. The cast is uniformly excellent. I was a bit hesitant about the casting of James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal since David Simon is known for casting lesser-known people, but they’re doing excellent and fit into the world quite well. the pace is slower as expected for a David Simon show. It takes its time to develop everything but it never feels boring. And I’m already quite attached to all of the characters. Oh and let’s not forget the amazing recreation of 1970s NYC. Can’t wait to see we how the second half of the season plays out! Favorite character. Sorry forgot to respond to this earlier. That's tough. In terms of likability, probably Sandra Washington, the reporter. But Lawrence Gilliard Jr. (fantastic as usual) as Chris Alston is a great character too. MVP as far as performances is probably Maggie Gyllenhaal as Candy and Gary Carr as C.C.

Good lord, that last episode was pure cinema. Best of the season so far, IMO.

What did everyone think of the finale/season as a whole? Wish it were longer but I've enjoyed it so far. I still find the Gyllenhaal/Krumholtz storyline to be the most engaging and fascinating (I'm constantly waiting for the story to shift from Franco back to them). Still, I like the cast and the production values are strong and feel lived-in -- not distracting as some shows set in that era tend to be. Looking forward to the next season.

I actually was a bit let down by the finale, especially in light of last week's high. I think some scenes were a bit too on the nose, e.g., CC's conversation with the older pimp, Eileen all of a sudden having a catatonic gay brother, and Thunder Thigh's defenestration which was foreshadowed earlier in the season . And honestly the storyline with the mobsters and their backing of the brothels just isn't that interesting. Still a pretty good episode, though. I think the season as a whole was very strong, but not having seen The Wire ::dodges tomatoes::, I'm evaluating it as a standalone. At its very best, the show takes tropes about the very specific milieu it depicts (pimps of color, hookers with a heart of gold, wide-eyed newcomers to NYC) and turns them on their head. There's a contemporary awareness embedded in the show's writing which helps steer it away from sensationalising its subject matter.

I think the series as a whole would be stronger without Franco. It's not that he's bad (and coming from me, that's a high compliment), but I don't give a shit about Vincent or Frankie or their respective subplots. But the supporting ensemble is absolutely stellar. I could've done with a couple more episodes to flesh it out, but for a freshman season, it's pretty damn strong.

I was mixed on the pilot but I thought it at least had interesting enough characters to continue watching. The twins, Abby, CC, I guess Candy, and later on, the reporter. But S1 didn't work for me. It could've been minimized into 100m (instead of 9 hours) and wouldn't lose very much. What character truly changes? I think Candy, and that's it. Everybody else is pretty similar to how we knew them after ten minutes of the pilot. The ensemble is okay, I don't think anybody is a standout really. (And I'm not a big Franco or Gyllenhaal fan anyway.) The dialogue was sometimes horrendous. I just don't see what critics (and audiences for that matter) see in this, but didn't see in Vinyl, which was better in every way.........

Overall I really loved the first season and the finale definitely shook me up emotionally. I also wish there could've been more than 8 episodes (which is a huge compliment coming from me. I usually criticize seasons for being too long), but I'm guessing due to the high production values, that's what they could work with. I'm definitely excited for season 2 and I'm really excited to see how these storylines continue to play out especially with Candy and Alston.

So I'm just done with episode 6 and I love this show too much for the first Season to be almost done with...couldn't they have at least stretched to 10 episodes.

Well I'm done with Season One and this is my new favourite show, and in a year with the crushing disappointment that was Fargo Season 3, this lovely surprise has more than made up for it.
There is nary a story-line running in this show right now that I'm not loving and totally invested in. I'm totally gutted that the Season was so short.

The 1978 NYC setting has overtones like QT's 1969 Hollywood film in a way too - both were sort of fantasy eras interrupted by an encroaching darkness. Could be great.......

Finished season 1 in just a few days a couple of days ago and I loved it. Can’t wait to see what they have in store for this season. Glad they kept Franco around.
