I normally don't even like Franco but damn, he's got David Simon in his corner this time around and is playing 2 roles in what looks like a great show. Franco's coming for that Emmy nom!

Not feeling it. I'm seeing a Vinyl-esque flop.

I feel like this has three too many James Francos and Maggie Gyllenhaals. But I'll be willing to check out anything with David Simon's name attached to it. Definitely looks like it has potential; seems very Scorsese-esque.

The Deuce premieres September 10 at 9PM on HBO. Starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Deuce explores 1970s New York at the pioneering moments of what would become the billion-dollar American sex industry.

Glad to see so many Wire alumni in this. Franco still makes me leery, but if David Simon's involved, my ass is there.

Very mixed on the pilot, which was about 90 minutes. Little to no narrative pull, only semi interesting characters, evocation of time period not felt. Really lame opening to the show too, the pre-credits sequence. Doesn't set the show at the right pitch (or an exciting pitch, rather). Franco's Frankie character is pure De Niro in Mean Streets. Wouldn't mind more from him. But MVP so far is Margarita Levieva.
Show seems like a lesser Vinyl, in every way. And why did critics berate that one so much? Meanwhile they're all (overrating and) fawning over The Deuce so far.....

really dug the pilot. Franco (who I am normally mixed on ) is quite good as the twin brothers. Also, Method Man's haircut in this is fucking awesome. I'll definitely continue watching it.

That pilot was amazing. Wow. It looked so Vinyl, and even though I never totally lost faith in David Simon I was definitely concerned with the whole Franco factor, but damn. None of the actors ruined it, it did a pretty strong if often kind of cliched set up job, but the magic was in the production. That time and place has been recreated many many times on big screen and small, but I don't recall it ever being done that well. You could smell it.

Hopefully it won't end up like The Brink and Vinyl where they later undo their renewal.

Watched the pilot last night. Very strong direction from Michelle MacLaren, evoking the polished look of Ridley Scott's American Gangster while not overlooking the grungy squalidity of '70s-era Scorsese. It's gonna take some time getting used to the characters, as it's far too early to make a judgment call on favorite performances or characters yet. Much like The Wire, this one seems to demand the viewer take its time getting into the world before going one way or the other.
With that said, so glad to see Don Harvey getting work.

I just got to see the pilot last night and I really, really liked it. It just felt like the slow beginning of something with bags of potential. I remember feeling something similar after episode 1 of 'The Wire', and while I have no expectation of it being anywhere near that in quality; the similar feeling gives me hope.
I'm liking Vinny, Candy, Larry, Darlene a lot so far. Also, Ruby seems like the kinf of character who could be some nice comic relief. I'm a little unsure on Abby though. I feel like she'll be a super redundant character, the likes of which Jarvis Cocker perfected in a song 20 something years ago, leaving me unable to take most onscreen portrayals of that kind of person seriously since. Still I may be jumping the gun, as I'm only one episode in.
Also, I am totally on board with those who mentioned Method Man's hair. If there's an Emmy for hair, close the vote now.

Finished the pilot tonight. Loved the attention to period detail, and also intrigued by the somewhat glacial tone of the storytelling seeing how the general inclination would be to exploit the seedy and visceral feeling of NYC during the 70s. Acting is great across the board, though I was most impressed with Gyllenhaal.
Also, Franco is HOT SHIT and y'all h8ers can kiss my ass on that front.

Also, anyone else find the casting of Levieva as a 20-year-old a bit distracting? (She's 36/37 IRL) We don't know much about the characters yet, but already I feel like Meade or even Kazan should've played that role instead.

I caught episode two last night, and I'm really beginning to like this an awful lot. The characters are developing nicely and the plot is bubbling slowly, but not so slowly that it seems directionless at this point.

After 4 episodes, I’m really loving this. Wonderful successor to The Wire (it’s grest seeing actors from The Wire pop up) but with enough originality to stand on its own and not rely on nostalgia for The Wire. The cast is uniformly excellent. I was a bit hesitant about the casting of James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal since David Simon is known for casting lesser-known people, but they’re doing excellent and fit into the world quite well. the pace is slower as expected for a David Simon show. It takes its time to develop everything but it never feels boring. And I’m already quite attached to all of the characters. Oh and let’s not forget the amazing recreation of 1970s NYC. Can’t wait to see we how the second half of the season plays out!
