Lately I've been watching a ton of Law & Order SVU out of boredom a show I could never stand and ........I still can't stand it . Running more than twice as many seasons as my beloved D'Onofrio acting tour de force Law And Order: Criminal Intent, it got bigger ratings, bigger guest stars (they had Huppert for Godsakes!), a more devoted audience AND kicked its ass in television industry awards shows. Lurid plots I need a shower after watching and phony sanctimonious heavy handed "justice" (like Criminal Minds or, um, Prisoners actually). Meanwhile CI still holds up great especially its first 4 seasons and was just too weird to really get a handle on for mainstream audiences - unlike the other Law and Order shows, it's about the "why" not the "who" and it's oddball rhythms and quirky lead characterization didn't lend themselves to the simple bad guy paying for it at the end. Another one like this to me, in a way, is Superstore which is an utterly average show (with some occasional laughs it should be noted) that I would bet could stay on NBC for years (it's completed 3 seasons I think), despite being something I see as a Community wannabe - at least going after the same target audience but without the wit or ambition or charm. You could see Community being the started point and then everything made safe from there. What are some of these for you? Some where you wanna smack the viewing audience around a bit and say "Come on!!"
