I saw this post earlier today, and then I wrote this big long post like I usually do. When I hit reply though, it said that the thread no longer existed. Luckily for me, but maybe unluckily for everyone else here, I was able to save my post. So I kept waiting for the poster who made it (sorry I didn't catch his/her name) to recreate the thread again, but so far nothing. Since I'm about to leave for awhile, I decided I should create the thread otherwise I'll probably forget about it later.
With all that out of the way, how would everyone rank Celine, Mariah, and Whitney.
Here were my rankings and reasonings:
1. Whitney - I have to admit that if she hadn't died so young, I probably would have ranked her second. I mean I think out of the three, she had the best voice and maybe the best songs, imo, but if she were still alive, I'd have to take off points that she didn't take very good care of her instrument later on. I mean she could still sing and didn't have any throat problems yet, but I'm sure they would have happened eventually.
As for her songs, obviously anything from The Bodyguard especially "I Will Always Love You" would probably be what people remember most about Houston's songs. As long as there are televised talent shows those songs will always live on on.
I think her version of the "Star Spangled Banner" also deserves mention since I remember it being a really big thing at the time, and then there was the mini scandal of whether she really sang it live or not at the Super Bowl.
"One Moment in Time" was another song that she did for a large, public event, and I remember that song being everywhere for awhile and still getting played sometimes today.
My favorite of hers though outside of The Bodyguard soundtrack would be the songs from her first two albums. Like Mariah, I think that critics and fans of Whitney prefer her later stuff where she took more chances and stepped outside of the box that Clive Davis first put her in, but songs like "Saving All My Love for You", "How Will I Know", "Greatest Love of All", "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", "So Emotional", "Didn't We Almost Have It All", etc. will always be the songs I listen to the most.
2. Celine - I love her and that she knew early on how important it was to protect her voice above all else, and guess what, she can still sing unlike Mariah and some of the other divas who damaged their voices due to doing too many vocal gymnastics.
I prefer Whitney's songs more, but Dion has a lot of classics too. Obviously "My Heart Will Go On" will probably always be her most iconic song. She was also a part of the soundtrack for the animated version of Beauty and the Beast, did "When I Fall in Love" for Sleepless in Seattle, and "Because You Loved Me" for Up Close and Personal; although, the latter is probably remembered more than the actual film is now.
3. Mariah - I feel bad that she went off the rails so publicly and still seems to have a lot of issues, and the way Tommy Mottola did her during her marriage to him was nasty. Yet I hate that she thinks that people are gullible enough to believe that she can still reach those high notes that she use to be able to hit by pretending that the backing track is her hitting those notes live. Plus, she still seems to think that she's at the height of her fame. Yes, I understand she's a diva, and it can be cute/funny sometimes like on MTV Cribs when she gets on exercise equipment in heels, but I think she's taking it too far lately especially since her career isn't anything to write home about lately.
I prefer her earlier material until Butterfly which I think seems to be the opposite of what most of her fans like. I mean I do like some songs after she decided to go a different direction, but "Vision of Love", "Hero", "Without You", "Emotions", "Dream Lover" were my jams when I was younger. I have to give a lot of respect to "All I Want for Christmas Is You". It's definitely one of the best Christmas songs and maybe one of the only original Christmas songs of the past 30 years or so.
Anyway after Butterfly, I've liked some of her songs especially "We Belong Together" and "Shake It Off" and many of her cover songs, but for me she hasn't made any songs that I think will join some of her other songs as classics.
Finally, I actually think the soundtrack to Glitter is underrated and that Carey is actually a good actress in certain films like Precious, but Glitter was just a terrible idea. She seems like a person that really needs to have a "no" person in her life that she actually listens to, but since she obviously doesn't have one, I fear that she'll just keep making more and more bad decisions with her career.
