I suspect most people will say yes although she's actually only headlined one hit since breaking out in 2003. Personally I think she's a recognizable face at this point but I doubt she is the type of name that draws crowds to films that they weren't otherwise already at least casually interested in.

Are you PenguinOnIce
Anyway, we know you hate her, but I think she's a draw to a certain extent and famous (she certainly increases the profile and awareness of her films), but won't be able to rescue films with bad reviews or poor marketing as Ghost in the Shell and Rough Night has shown
IIRC, like 40% of Ghost and Rough Night audience went because of her according to Deadline
She reminds of Dwayne Johnson in that regard

I'd say she's a draw, although it is a little hard to say considering her choice in film. With Ghost in the Shell, I think that film would hurt a lot by its (deserved) bad publicity over the whitewashing and Rough Night failed because of its horrible release date and it being a genre outside of Johansson's wheelhouse - with pretty much anybody considered a draw, it's usually within a certain genre or "type" of film.

Yeah, that's why I mentioned Dwayne Johnson because you give him something like San Andreas, and it explodes, but as Baywatch proved, not even he could save such an indifferent comedy It was always funny to me when Sandler stepped out of his comfort zone to do a drama or more serious film, and it would bomb miserably This was a guy who has over ten 100m grossers, and sold comedies consecutively for years, but not even his drawing power could get people to see Funny People or PDL

I just think she's overrated as a draw, not worth her salary and rather bland as a movie star (she works far better in independent productions imo). As for her box office pull, I just don't think there's enough evidence over the course of her career pointing towards her being a draw. I won't argue her draw power for Lucy, l'll give her that. Though it is interesting the way the studio has taken the bulk of the blame for her latest vehicle... If you look at something like Lucy, it was also promoted extremely well, like an event film and yet no one mentions the studio there.

Lucy had good trailers and an amazing studio, but she really elevated it into the WW breakout hit that it was Sony is in utter shambles right now, and Rough Night had no buzz, and certainly wasnt an event I think McCarthy and Ferrell are the only ones who could survive bad studio comedy marketing, but even then The Boss did 60m which is very low for her standards I dont think she's a huge draw-- I'd say the biggest draw is obviously Leo, who usually has great films with strong trailers, but they turn out to be the breakout hits because of his presence-- but she is to some extent and still increases the WW profile and awareness of her films (Under the Skin is an avant garde indie and did 5m WW)

No, but few actors are these days. 99% of the time these days, it's about the concept before it's about the actor.

In the right genres, she is. Few actors can sell films across multiple styles anymore (DiCaprio might be the only one left), but Johansson is well-liked by audiences and her presence is certainly an asset under the right circumstances. Ghost in the Shell was a pretty big let-down, but Rough Night seems to have been poorly marketed, so I don't necessarily hold it against her.

I assumed she was after Lucy, which seemed like an uber-generic action movie that was a hit just because of her name (like just about everything Cruise has done for the past decade) and I was thusly expecting both Ghost in the Shell and Rough Night to be big hits. They weren't so now I'm doubting it. Lucy was right around the peak of Marvelmania, so her status as Black Widow may have propelled it at the time, but to a lesser extent today.

Leonardo DiCaprio is the only box office draw right now. Others need good reviews or genre help.

Oh, honey. It's all worked out on averages.
Amy Adams has $75 million
Blannie has $68 million
Nicole Kidman has $38 million
and ScarJo has $91 million... Do you know if she needs a stand-in?

Not a complete draw, but it does depend on the movie she's in.

Saw Rough Night last night and that woman is just not funny. The supporting cast did wonders with the material but she was dragging the whole thing down. She should stick to action genre where she just has to be presentable and minimally emote.

I think she does well in dramas but her comedy skills are just not good. It was especially evident here where literally everyone was funnier than she was
