This was recommended by the Last Podcast on the Left boys on their Donner Party episodes. They consider it one of the finest historical books they've ever used as research. It's really well-written and researched and such a sad, fucked-up story. Definitely reads like a horror story in bits, especially the parts describing what the rescue parties found. Sounds like stuff you'd find in Ed Gein's basement.

My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones. I’m really glad Jones is starting to become a success. He deserves it. My first Jones was The Least of My Scars, which is one of the most disturbing novels I've ever read. It's the closest thing to a literary version of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer I've found. I’ve just read The Only Good Indian and this so for. That one doesn’t really sound like my cup of tea but I will definitely read more. I have to support an indigenous author from my home state. He’s also great.

I love this series soooo much. I still haven't finished The Secret History, though. I am really turned off by the characters.

Oh honeys, I've always been curious about reading this and now I am I can't put it down: This story is harrowing and heart-breaking. Nancy Spungen was a deeply disturbed child (but one with an extremely high IQ) from a nice Jewish middle class family and went through her short life probably as an untreated paranoid schizophrenic. Her family always knew that something was very wrong but Nancy seemed to confound the medical profession. We all know how this tragedy ended but it really makes you think about people's mental health and what they might be going through to behave in the way they do and also about the media's portrayal of Nancy. This book is written compassionately by Nancy's mother about what the family went through - I can't say it isn't a nightmare of sorts.

What do you think so far? I meant to preorder it but the release date totally slipped by me. Still looking forward to checking it out soon.

I was given this audiobook as a birthday gift. Just started it today. Lets see if I'll finish. Stephen Colbert promoted it. Author Edan Lepucki

Oh honeys, this is delicious! A perfectly positioned sun lounger to capture the late summer sun, a pitcher of Margaritas, and a large dose of irony are the perfect accompaniments with this. @tyler

halfway through Midnight in Washington and it's pretty wonderful so far. First portion very briefly chronicles Schiff's backstory and Congressional service though little is said about his background as a lawyer (which has served him well these past couple years). Practically nothing is said of the Bush years and very little of the Obama years apart from a nod to the failed Benghazi investigation. The book is largely an insider's play-by-play of the House Intelligence Committee's investigation into Trump's collusion with Russia coinciding with the Mueller Investigation (including how the Republicans on the committee tried to sabotage or stall the investigation at every step peaking with Devin Nunes's self-parodical "Midnight Run") and the first Trump impeachment, capping off with the Jan 6th insurrection later which I haven't gotten to yet. Currently we're in Impeachment #1.
the best part so far has been a word-for-word quotation of one of Sciff's best speeches, when the House GOP in 2019 collectively called for his resignation from the House Intelligence Committee and he clapped back. I wasn't paying attention in 2019 so I completely missed this, but man what a moment.

halfway through Story of O and it's just straight-up porn although I don't know what I was expecting. Deslos either wrote this stuff constantly giggling or very horny (maybe both) and I respect it either way.

The Naked Face by Sidney Sheldon. I read it many years ago and enjoyed it then, but reading it now, its pretty bad. I still love Sheldon though. Most people have a bad first novel.

my Spooktober reading list: My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix Red by Jack Ketchum Cujo by the King Himself The Deep by Nick Cutter might not get to all of them but we'll see how it goes. Last year I kinda waffled on my spooky reading so hopefully this year goes better. We're starting with My Best Friend's Exorcism! I read Hendrx's Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires last year and had tons of fun with it. Had this great blend of a nostalgic light spooky fun with dry comic charm and seasoned sparingly with moments of stunning gore.
