started reading A Very Stable Genius, the Leonnig / Rucker Trump book from 2020 that covers most of his administration. Not super interested in continuing. First few chapters are covering a lot of the stuff I already got in the first Woodward Trump book, with the same structure of deriving narratives from juicy insider quotes. Mainly wanted to read this to get to the sequel I Alone Can Fix It which covers the pandemic response & 2020 election interference. I might just skip ahead to that one... who's counting anyways.

With my Vonnegut summer completed, I'm into horror again.

Finally read Middlemarch by George Eliot, which was every bit as good as I had hoped. Wonderful portrait and study of contemporary society. Some parts are very dickensian (also the build-up, though it's not quite as complex) others remind a bit of Jane Austen, but Eliot's focus lies more on the inner mind and feelings of her protagonists. Great book.
At the moment I'm sitting at an even more voluminous book: Brandon Sanderson's Rhythm of War, the fourth part of his Stormlight Archive.

Jafsie and John Henry: Essays on Hollywood, Bad Boys and Six Hours of Perfect Poker (1999) David Mamet
Mostly it's Mamet diarizing on stuff (cashmere sweaters, knives that aren't stainless, etc) and in its brainy riffing trivia-ready display, it nicely follows with my last read Diary of Andrés Fava. Looser than usual for Book Mamet, as he smacks direct mid life, he offers us samplings of his lifetime, tales and hot takes. His books are underrated - of course he's a brilliant playwright and screenwriter, but he's a no-bullshit wit too, with lots of fact-stored insight, and keeps your attention well --- Writing in Restaurants, On Directing Film, Three Uses of a Knife, Bambi vs Godzilla, Some Freaks, etc.

Just started the 800 page tome Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. One chapter in, I'll see if I can get through it. A mildly entertaining start to what is supposedly the greatest fantasy novel of recent times.

Finished Neuromancer by William Gibson, but I didn't care for it. Now I'm in the middle of The Great Gatsby, which is one of those classics that I just never got around to reading. I'm enjoying it a lot so far.

well finished Valley of the Dolls in one sitting because it's so short, and now I feel like I need a shower. God what an upsetting book.

I read Lee's biography of Edith Wharton years ago and loved it. Really looking forward to this...

Finished Great Gatsby today. Thought it was pretty fantastic. Definitely one of the few "top tier classic" things that is pretty much as good as everyone says. The movies don't even come close to doing the book justice so everyone should read it.

starting this because it's a manageable runtime and I want to finish another book before October because that month belongs to Stephen King

The Changeling by Victor Lavalle and I enjoying it a lot. I’m making a point to search out horror novels written by PoC. Going to read Zone One by Colson Whitehead next.

The Changeling by Victor Lavalle and I enjoying it a lot. I’m making a point to search out horror novels written by PoC. Going to read Zone One by Colson Whitehead next. Victor LaValle is a legend. The Ballad of Black Tom is a fascinating read as well, but I think I would've liked it more if he hadn't felt the need to chain himself to Lovecraft's original story. It works as a great counter-argument to "The Horror of Red Hook," but I think The Changeling was him hitting his stride.
