The Big Goodbye: Chinatown and the Last Years of Hollywood (2020) - Sam Wasson. "Sharon Tate looked like California." Great opening line. Nearly halfway thru, wanted to mention the book for anyone who maybe didn't have it on their radar. This is a trove for Chinatown fans - cough pacinoyes - and anyone who liked OUATIH too. I keep half-expecting Tarantino to pop in for a quote. So far, quite detailed and far-spread look at California history, culture, tragedies, and most importantly its characters, typically artists, ambitious, teetering, madly talented. I love how it's conveyed that Polanski and Robert Towne at certain points become detectives themselves. Wasson has a way with making even peripheral figures stand out interestingly. Haven't even dove into Nicholson yet...!

Un hiver à Paris by Jean-Philippe Blondel
Very intriguing insight into the thoughts and emotional feelings of a young man, whose fellow student, whom he knew just casually comitted suicide.
Also as I (have to) do from time to time I'm re-reading a few of Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey novels, which are still atop the crime genre and so excellent and humorous written. Once again I lived through "Whose Body?", "The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club" (what a fantastic title!), "Unnatural Death" and now my favourite of them all: "Murder Must Advertise".

Heinrich Spoerl - Der Maulkorb
One of the most amusing books I've read. Ridiculing administrations and bigotry.

Let me bare my ignorance here for a second— I just finished reading Little Women for the first time, which I bought in preparation for the new film but didn't finish before going to watch it. (I haven't watched any of the other versions either; by the by.) Sitting down to read the rest of the book after watching Gerwig's adaptation, I kept thinking that there were way too few chapters left for Alcott to go over all the years' worth of plot that the film covers... and now that I'm done with it I find out that what I bought was actually not the complete work, but merely part one of two, and that there's an entire second novel that's 100 pages longer than what I just read. Not my proudest moment.

Just started up The Boatman's Daughter by Andy Davidson, who wrote the outstanding vampire novel In the Valley of the Sun a few years back. Davidson's a fresh, vital talent who can turn quite the phrase, and his first few pages of his new book are hauntingly evocative.

Conversations with Darius Khondji (2018) - About the thinking behind cinematography, the differentiating practice of it depending on the the filmmaker and project, covering the whole career of Khondji, with brief side interviews with several who've worked with/around him, including Woody Allen and Huppert. Not many DPs have worked with this amount of talent: Michael Haneke, Woody Allen, Polanski, David Fincher, Bernardo Bertolucci, Stephen Frears, Bong Joon ho, PTA…. and there's also his influential work with Jean-Pierre Jeunet, his evocative work with James Gray, and his latest swishing work with the Safdies...

Finished Joyland last week. Definitely a fun read, rather charming and extraordinarily brief by King standards.
Just started The Bazaar of Bad Dreams, as I continue through King Quest. I'm quite excited for this one.

The Diary of a Porn Star by Priscilla Wriston-Ranger As Told to David Mamet with an Afterword by Mr. Mamet (2019) by David Mamet (that's the actual copyrighted title!) The book jacket blurb-reviews and the opening epigraph - “A Cheerful disposition is more precious than gold, for it cannot be confiscated at the border. Lao Tzu” - are feigned, as it all is, and very funny. The rest of this autofiction by Mamet, that has gone almost 100% under the radar, gets some giggles and floats over a lot of intentionally trivial "biographical" moments - she's more than just the porn star of Beef Encounter (which is as far as the sex references go), she's a former U.S. Forest Service ranger, FBI consultant, inventor of certain anti-perspirants, children's book author, Polar philanthropist, and loves a good cigar - some of the ideas can be funny but it's too loosely, randomly etched. Some of Mamet and his pet topics can't hide - like when the porn star says her favorite philosopher is Daffy Duck (a Mamet favorite). Wouldn't recommend the book, really. MsMovieStar 's future memoirs "Three Bedsheets to the Wind: A Star is Porn" will put this book to shame!

Read Vigil in the Night, my first encounter with A.J. Cronin. A bit too melodramatic and sentimental in a not so good way.
Now: The Woman in the Dunes (Suna no onna) by Kobo Abe.

Oh honey, That's a good title but I'm hoping the outline for my book, 'I'll Give You Something to Cry About: The Diary of a diligent Dominatrix' will create a huge billion dollar bidding war... I can see a screenplay, a six picture movie option, a cute line of merch, including a wipeable fashion range, an aerobics workout video with whips...even a chain of schools... my character of Kristin Black is gonna be something else! This is gonna to be even bigger than Fifty Shades... Men will be lining around the block for this one... women will be instantly empowered, just by buying the book. They'll also be a coloring section at the back, and a subplot involving a lost kitten (in case, Disney wants to pick it up).

This book sounds like it could be a marvelous film if it gets that far - I already have ideas for the skinematographer and headitor (or the head editor). I was sitting here slowly stroking my.........beard.......... imagining all the cross promotions. I could see fast food ties with McDonald's with french fries in the shape of small whips and also their REALLY REALLY happy meals advertising and also the t-shirt/bumper sticker market with WWKBD? product (Who Would Kristin Black do?). This book will be huge with literacy campaigns, erectile dysfunction education and also the vision impaired - if you have the a scratch and sniff section of course. Bravo Legend

I'm really excited about the coloring section. What do think about a collectable, limited edition of 50,000, supplied with a pack of coloring pencils starting with a flesh colored hue and graduating upwards to a vivid scarlet, for the lash marks? I love the Happy Meals idea, the little edible whips. You should get onboard! With our combined genius, we could have the market covered. Complete world domination! I feel Kristin Black should be from Baltimore, as I'm at the point in my career where I need to do the accent. I also think the Academy would love it... Oh honey, glow in the dark, neon bumper stickers with the words, Honk, if you've seen Kristin's pussy'... Too much?
