Strangely, I'm starting to enjoy Barbara Streisand as an actress.
Funny Girl is gorgeous to look at and Streisand gives a great performance as Fanny Brice, albeit too modern for the era the film is set, and Omar Sharif is completely delicious as Nick Arnstein.
The chemistry between the two leads is really just surface level and we never really get a real sense that Sharif's character truly loves Fanny, but they are still a joy to watch together.
It's also quite hilarious and the music has held up really well.
I dont know enough about the real Brice and Arnstein to judge whether the film is a decent biopic but its a solid and enjoyable musical.
I'd give it 7/10.

I really liked the movie, it drops a bit on the second half but it's consistently enjoyable and I agree about both the humor and the music. I quite like Barbra as an actress, I think she brings an amazing energy to every role. I cannot picture her in some meeker roles, but she's fantastic in these kinds. Plus, her comic timing is impeccable.

As a star vehicle for Streisand, it's nothing short of spectacular.

I always have liked it. Of course though, I grew up with Streisand films since my parents are both huge fans of hers. It is her film all the way, abd the film is glorious.

Dull and flat-footed and not even Streisand feels transcendent. Likely she also to the fact that she dramatically plays the role as herself and not Fanny. She deserved the Oscar for The Way We Were which is a much better movie that for which she gives a complex, nuanced performance. Her best dramatic work.
