as in no reactions, or is that what the reactions were like? Sorry not JayAgain, but I've been following The Current War thread at AW. It's what the reactions were like at least according to one poster there. (It seems JayAgain might know some other people who didn't post publicly about the screening who didn't like it either though.) One poster did like it, but his/her taste was questioned because he/she liked The Mummy and strongly disliked Ali's performance last year in Moonlight. The poster who hated it is a big fan of Bryan Cranston in everything including Trumbo, so I take it that The Current War must be really bad since he seems like he would be more open to liking the kind of Oscar bait Harvey was probably hoping it was going to be.

To be honest, the idea of a Weinstein Company awards hopeful starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison is so uninteresting and dull that I don't even have a reaction to these reactions, one way or the other. That's how unappealing this project is.

I'm boycotting this movie on principle. It's about Americans and takes place in the US but it was filmed in the UK and stars (save for Shannon and Waterston) mainly Brits. WTF? This is getting ridiculous. At this point, Hollywood is no different from Wal-Mart or Kmart or Apple or any of those evil big businesses. They provide you with an inferior product made elsewhere by someone else. But they reap the profits. To hell with American workers and actors!

So it didn't go well? Damn I had it high on my predictions. I wasn't predicting this for anything before but Michael Shannon because it seemed like Mary Magdalene was going to be TWC's number one this year, but I remember being burned by early reports about Lion last year so you never know. I remember someone knew someone at Cannes who said Harvey screened it on a yacht there, and it supposedly was awful. So I took it out of my predictions completely which ended up being a big mistake. So far I've heard that this, The Greatest Showman on Earth, and Downsizing are basically flops according to early screenings, but who knows in the end. I remember Philomena and Selma tested badly at first, and early word on La La Land last year was that it was just going to be a Globe player. (Although to be fair, the Globes went nuts for it, and it probably barely won Best Director and lost Best Picture despite being the frontrunner.)

So it didn't go well? Damn I had it high on my predictions. It's a mess, and it was never going to be a contender anyway, honestly Script was average, and it lacked any narrative and emotion Who cares about Edison, really-- at least Imitation Game was commercial and had the whole WW2 narrative (and the gay angle Weinstein pushed), and Lion was garbage emotional crowdpleaser This had none of that

Weinstein moved it to the Mary Magdalene spot with a November release date. The early word has been so mixed-to-negative that I don't know what to think of this. Cumberbatch may get in but it's such a packed year and I don't know if he'll do anything he hasn't done before. Shannon may get a nom again either for this or "Shape of Water".

That just means he thinks it's better than MM, which is probably going to be a disaster.
